Time allowed: Three hours 18 January 2019

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
 This paper contains Part 1 and Part 2
 Answer All questions of Part 1
 Answer Two questions of Three of Part 2

PART I – Answer All Questions

1. What is the purpose of introducing Robots to the world? (06 Marks)

2. List six simple machines and explain any three of them. (12 Marks)
3. There are several types of Infrared (IR) sensors available for 5VDC operation (10
Marks)
a) IR Proximity sensor with Digital Output
b) IR Proximity sensor with Digital Output & Analog Output
Explain about both a & b sensor types and then select one for a fuzzy-logic controlled
line following robot mentioning the reason for selection.
4. Imagine you have been given to find a battery for an IoT (Internet of Things) unit,
based on a Micro controller board and two 5VDC sensors. The unit needs to transmit
data twice per day. The unit must be placed in a no-power area (No solar, No
electricity). So please suggest a type of battery with the best performance and cost
effectiveness. (12 Marks)

PART II – Answer only TWO of THREE including Question 1

1. You are given to design and build an Autonomous Mobile Robot that follows a black line
in a white floor. It is needed to include Fuzzy Logic Control on speed controlling.
(40 Marks)
a. Please explain the concept which you have planned to use for the Robot.
(12 Marks)
b. Name all components you need to build the robot and indicate why you select
those things. Answer should include facts regarding price and use. (08 Marks)
c. Explain issues you face in the construction phase of a robot and how you can
overcome these problems. (08 Marks)
d. You have several approaches to build this line following robot (Fixed speed, Fuzzy
& PID). But you have given to use Fuzzy Logic controls. Explain why we should use
it for better performance of speed and controlling of the robot. (12 Marks)
2. We have experience in disposing household items. With that experience explain a proper
DISPOSAL methodology for a fixed industrial robot (Stationary robot like Kuka).
(20 Marks)
3. Explain “Degrees of Freedom (DoF)” in robots taking a known sample robot as an
example. Your explanation should also include about the robot’s movements, rotations
and lifts. (20 Marks)
