The Revelation (617) yousuf mahbubul Islam, PhD

Do we ever think about any of the qualities of God? For example, who is He? What is He
like? Why did He create the Universe? Why did He create human beings? What is His
benefit in creating us? Why did He make the effort to make the universe and us? Could
these questions be relevant – relevant to reasons behind why we find ourselves alive
from being without existence at a point in time and suddenly discover life on earth?

If relevant and important to our origins, how can we find the answers to these questions?
Can we use logic and/or analogies? And can Holy Scriptures confirm such analogies?
Let us look at how we can logically study these questions. We intuitively and
scientifically know that “nothing” or something that does not exist cannot create
existence and that something unintelligent cannot create something intelligent. Scientists
have named the point at which the universe began as the “Big Bang” {1, 2}. Why such a
name? Is it because it was something that originated from nothing – similar to an
explosion of light suddenly filling up the complete darkness of an empty room? Scientists
are regularly coming up with theories of what existed before the Big Bang {1, 2}, but can
we run away from the fact that a Being with Intelligence and Power beyond the capacity
of physical scientific measurements and human comprehension must have brought the
universe into existence?

So why did this Being, Who we call God, create the universe? To answer this, lets ask a
logical analogous question. Without having any paintings, can a person lay claim to
being a painter? Equally, without having created anything, would there be any means to
know God’s Attribute as the Creator – a proof of His Ability to create? Would it then be
logical to say that God created the universe to be known through His Attributes?
Everything in the universe comes into existence, expands and grows by the Power and
Design of the Creator, as do human beings. Do human beings then have a special role –
especially since they are the only ones that can ask questions, do research to find the
truth? Humans are the only ones that can proclaim the truth about His Attributes. So, just
like art enthusiasts’ study and espouse the quality of famous painters, could the
purpose, job and responsibility of humans be to espouse the truth of the Creator?

The way God has created and integrated everything speaks not only of His Wisdom but
of His Divine Mercy and Love. The fact that He has put love in the hearts of His creation
is one proof of this – love for children, love for other humans, love of nature, love of
knowledge, etc. For humans to understand and appreciate the emotion of love, however,
the opposite, e.g., hate must also exist, as it is with all things. All humans and creation
benefit from His Divine Love and Mercy. As God wishes to be known, humans have a
choice – in return for existence to acknowledge and adore Him by observing and
studying His Attributes OR indulge in self-greatness and use God as a service provider.
The question is therefore, is there a price attached to each choice?

The medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas’ writings as reported in the interesting article
why did God create anything {3} echo that God created to demonstrate His Divine Mercy
and Love. In turn, does the Holy Scripture Al-Qur’an shed light on what we are doing on
earth? Let us study some Verses.
28.60 “The (material) things which you are given are but the conveniences
of this life and the glitter thereof; but that which is with God is better and
more enduring: will you not then be wise?”
Why is the Verse questioning our wisdom? How can we analyze the Verse? For the
purpose of understanding, let us pick out two phrases, conveniences of this life and
that which is with God is better and more enduring. To compare and contrast the
two phrases let us ask some questions. Are the two phrases talking about the same time
frames? As life on earth is temporary, “enduring” has to imply the afterlife with God. So,
if we want a good afterlife with God, our Creator, why is He comparing the conveniences
of this life? To make sense of this, let us look at one of the ways we use our mobile
phones. We often take “selfies”. When we take such pictures, is it just to record the
moment or also in appreciation of the way we look? We often upload these photos on
social media for others to appreciate. But wait, who has created the opportunity of the
moment and who has made our faces? Do we remember to thank Him after taking the
selfie? Do we accord Him any appreciation? If we are ungrateful and do not
acknowledge Him, how should He treat us on the Day of Judgment?

28.61 “Are (these two) alike? One to whom We have made a goodly
promise and who is going to reach its (fulfillment) and one to whom we
have given the good things of this life but who on the Day of Judgment is
to be among those brought up (for punishment)?”
The bounty of God is unlimited. The promise is of a good life after the Day of Judgment.
Who is God likely to give a good life subsequently? Just as He has created us from
nothing, would it be difficult for God to give us anything we want from His Bounty?

28.62 “That Day God will call to them and ask, "Where are my `partners'?
Whom you imagined (to be more important/dearer than Me)?"”
If we do not credit God for our beautiful personalities, for the pleasures we derive from
life and successes we have, whom in fact, do we actually feel deserves credit? Anything
other than God that we credit, including our egos or feelings of pride, other persons, or
lucky charms, etc., will be considered “partners” or competitors to God. Crediting any
partner is proof of disbelief and gravest of sins.

28.63 “Those against whom the charge will be proved will say, "Our Lord!
These are the ones whom we led astray: we led them astray as we were
astray ourselves: we free ourselves (from them) in Your Presence! It was
not us they worshipped."”
God will then issue a challenge on the Day of Judgment to prove that there is no power
other than Him. Persons, who considered themselves above the rest, will disown their
followers – be it anyone: religious leaders, politicians, bosses or anyone lying in a grave
and was approached.

28.64 “It will be said (to them), "Call upon your `partners' (for help)": they
will call upon them but they will not listen to them; and they will see the
Penalty (before them); (how they will wish) `If only they had been open to
guidance!'”
