In March of 2016, I got ridiculously excited to start
work on my new Gunpla project. Customising my
most favourite gundam design of all time: The MG
Zeta Plus C1. The master grade kit was older and
simpler than modern MG’s, and the proportions
would need a tonne of work that I not yet had the
skills or experience for. I actually had no idea of
the time sink tornado I was diving into. Ha!

Over the past year I have created and shared

over 800 WIP images on facebook. Now that the
WIP has completed, I wanted to gather them all
to share in one combined volume.

I hope you enjoy, because I sure as hell have

enjoyed making it.

WOAH!
WHAT GUNDAM IS THAT?!!
One of my earliest master grade suit design. I had seen the Zeta make it look real. I went off to

THE PURSUIT

When I finished snapping the Zeta

be real. I felt like the ten year old

jets and cars, doing the sounds of
their engines and battle sounds
as I moved them with my hands.
But this time the sounds were in
my mind. I was imagining hatches
opening on the C1, exhaust
vents blasting hot air, jet turbines
screaming and hundreds of
combined mechanical sounds that
all make it feel alive. This is just stunning. The proportions and sleek elegance. The mecha
artist can’t possibly know just how good this is!

WHAT’S
NEXT
I have sooo many ideas for projects
gunpla and non-gunpla that I want
to work on. I want to super detail
an MG Marasai in unicorn colours
or the MG Hazel Custom, or I
want to kitbash and scratchbuild
my own really beasty mean
Zeon mobile suit that would be
something totally new and unique.
Or I want to just have fun painting
some crazy colour schemes on
some little high grades. I want
to pursue my detailing skills and
ideas, but I also want to push my
creative side and see if I can do
my own gundam designs. I just
can’t decide! I do one custom per
year, and snap around 20 kits.
The snapping is the purest fun of
the hobby for me, enjoying new
engineering of a gundam’s leg or
just turning over runners from a
brand new kit in my hands.

So for now I’ll keep having gunpla

packages delivered to my door like
christmas presents all year round,
snapping and going “Woah! That
looks so RAD!”, I’ll do the Zeta
justice and start drawing it for my
next art piece and all the while see
which idea sparks the most ability
to max the play for me. One thing I
can guarantee, my next project will
have the biggest fanboy loving it:

MASKING
FOR PAINT
COMPENDIUM
PROJECT
Z E TA P L U S

286
C O L O U R S C H E M E
T H E O R Y
For the painting stage of the Zeta, I wanted
to keep the realistic all grey coloured
scheme for everything except the feet,
head vent trims, and small crotch inlay.

But I wanted to have the Zeta reveal a

little more detail when looked at closely.
So I decided to paint the greys using four
different shades. This is similar to the
plastic colour schemes of RG kits, and the
MG Sazabi Ver Ka.

From far away it would appear to be all 2

one colour, but close up, the differences
would reveal themselves and hopefully give
a subtle magic in that revealing process.
It would give a different balance of visual 1
weight to specific areas and aid in the eye
3
movement guiding of the kit’s details.

I painted with decanted Tamiya sprays

through an airbrush, using one base grey
colour, and adding white or adding black to
generate the different shades. I also used
Tamiya masking tape for the masking.

The following images show the steps of 4

masking to give the Zeta the quad grey
scheme. It will hopefully give an idea of how
many stages there are to multi coloured
panel paint schemes. It takes a TONNE of
time and your eyes nearly fall out of your
head, but GOSH it works!

The lower leg armor was extended using 4 x I noticed these lines, and of course became
2mm pla plate for a total extension of 8mm. I REALLY sad! I couldn’t ignore them. So I
used Contacta Professional plastic cement which sanded the paint layer and primer smooth.
is a solvent glue. Over the 6 months time from
the extensions and masking painting, the glue You can easily see the primer lines showing where
contracts, shrinking below the surface. the shrunk glue lines are.

These thigh pieces were painted, but their finish wasn’t as smooth as I
wanted. I really wanted to achieve my best painted surface ever. So as
much as my brain told me to just leave them alone, I made myself sand
them back! You can see how the remaining primer shows the imperfections
and lower areas. I am so glad I did this and repainted them. The final finish
was so worth the effort!
