What is Data?
Data is a collection of facts (numbers, words, measurements, observations, etc) that has
been translated into a form that computers can process.
Why is it important?
A Forbes article discussing a survey from Deloitte, notes that “49 percent of
respondents said analytics helps them make better decisions, 16 percent say that it
better enables key strategic initiatives, and 10 percent say it helps them improve
relationships with both customers and business partners.”

But to take full advantage of data and analytics, you need to know how to get the most
value from your data.
Data helps you make better decisions
● Finding new customers
● Increasing customer retention
● Improving customer retention
● Improving customer service
● Better managing marketing efforts
● Tracking social media interaction
● Predicting sales trands
● etc.
Data helps you solve problems
After experiencing a slow sales month or watching a poor-performing marketing
campaign, how do you pinpoint what went wrong? Tracking and reviewing data from
business processes helps you uncover performance breakdowns so you can better
understand each part of the process and know which steps need to be fixed and which
are performing well.
Data helps you understand performance
Data helps you improve processes
For example, bad advertising decisions can be one of the greatest wastes of resources in
a company. With data showing how different marketing channels are performing,
however, you can see which ones offer the greatest ROI and focus on those.

Or you could dig into why other channels are not performing as well and work to
improve their performance.

This would allow you budget to generate more leads without having to increase the
advertising spend.
Data helps you understand consumers
Without data, how do you know who your customers are? Without data, how do you
know if consumers like your products or if your marketing efforts are effective? Without
data, how do you know how much money you are making or spending?

Data is key to understanding your customers and market.

But how? How to ENABLE that?
1. Put your tracker on. Example: Google Analytics Tracker, Firebase, Appsflyer,
Mixpanel, etc
2. Define Business Metrics. Example: GPV, GMV, Daily Usage, etc
3. Crunching your databases and trackers to create those metrics
4. Visualize to “5 years old kid” mindset
5. Bring assumption to the insight, which one is executable for the business
Do we need data team?
I get this question frequently.

For example, liputan6.com just has 1 data analyst, for Financial Reporting to EMTEK
Holdings. Their Marketing and Business Development crunching data from Google
Analytics.

Gojek, Grab, Qasir etc have a lot of data team because their data stack couldn’t be
generated by current technology. Their customizations are a lot, fast phase and take
business decision weekly, even daily. That’s why they need a lot of data person.
Thank you!
