PERSONAL STATEMENT

REASON FOR APPLYING/STATEMENT OF INTEREST

My schooling develops my interest in writing legal articles. Working as a research assistant

for various law professors is unquestionably a rewarding experience, equipping me with the
necessary skills to conduct legal research which essentially influenced the methodology
adopted in my first published article in an international journal. I have my article published
in one of the best legal journals in Europe, namely the European Review of Private Law,
showing high capabilities. This fruitful experience turns me from a mere law student into a
young legal scholar and ultimately paves my way to pursue a master’s degree in law.
Recently, I have also written another article on labour laws, condemning those unscrupulous
HK employers’ skilful strategy to deny severance payment to fixed-term employees today.
This article calls for reform of the existing Employment Ordinance, which is full of loopholes,
and is currently under consideration of a leading Asian law journal – Asian Pacific Law
Review – for publication. Most importantly, I wrote and published all these articles on my
own initiative – without anyone telling me I had to do that! Indeed, my law professors and
mooting coach are all impressed by my scholarship. I know that Cambridge has one of the
world-renowned law faculties offering the MCL program with a strong commercial and
corporate law focus. This programme will definitely serve as an impetus to drive me to
become a successful barrister and legal scholar in the future.

CAREER GOALS

I aspire to become a barrister practicing commercial law and an adjunct law professor (legal
scholar), contributing to the legal development of Hong Kong, both practically and
academically. My enthusiasm for being a legal scholar can be further exemplified by my
invaluable working experience in one of the world’s largest law publishers, LexisNexis. I took
the initiative to reach out to Mr Stanley Tang, its Talent Acquisition Relationship Manager,
via Linkedin and specifically asked for internship opportunities which would not normally be
available to law students. During my internship, I had the chance to coordinate the
publishing process of a Hong Kong Legal Dictionary and contribute meaningfully to the new
edition of online publications including The Annotated Ordinances of Hong Kong. This is
definitely an invaluable experience for an aspiring legal scholar like me. As you can see, I
successfully link my lifelong interest in law with my passion for writing and publishing.
