In Lesson 3 of this 10 part series, we learned the secrets of how to harness the power of the
solar rays to increase vitality, mental/emotional balance, and spiritual remembrance. In
this lesson we will turn our gaze once more upwards to the heavens and learn some of the
secrets of the moon; what in Yoga is termed “Chandra Vidya”.
In societies and cultures which value spiritual life as the foremost aspect of human
existence, the moon plays an equally important role in their cosmology as does the sun.
Many world cultures still base their calendars upon the moon as well as base their seasonal
planting and harvesting cycles on its phases, and most importantly, base their spiritual
practices on the position of the moon in relation to the sun.
Of these lunar phases, it is the full moon night that is considered most powerful by many
sacred wisdom traditions the world over. In the realm of Yoga, this is no exception, and in
fact plays a crucial role in the inner lives of Yogis who are seeking to balance the flow of
prana through the left and right sides of the body/mind.
The link between the body and mind is the breath. It is the breath that regulates the pranic
currents through the subtle energetic body, which in Yoga is called the “Sukshma Sharira”- or
the Subtle Energy Body. Learning how to use the breath to influence the movement of
energy through the body/mind is the subject matter of many Yogic practices. These
practices are many-fold and are beyond the scope of this lesson- they are best learned from
a skilled and experienced teacher. What is common to most of these inner practices, which
is rarely taught to the public, is the best time in which to engage in these practices.
Yoga posits that the energy body has 3 principle currents of pranic flow. The central energy
channel that flows from the 1st to 7th chakra, through the subtle spine, is called Sushuma
Nadi. The energy channel that flows through the left side of the body is called “Ida Nadi” or
“Chandra Nadi” (the current of the moon). While the right current is called “Pingala Nadi” or
