Lab 1: Introduction to Electronic Trainer and Measuring Instruments:
Oscilloscope and Digital Millimeter (DMM)

Objectives:

To demonstrate the operation of electronic trainer, particularly generation of AC signals and using of
bred board. The use of DMM to measure voltages, currents and resistances and oscilloscope to view the
waveform of the input signal.

Tools Used:

1. Electronic Trainer
2. Digital Multimeter (DMM)
3. Oscilloscope

Submission Date: 17 October 2016

Evaluation: Signatures of Lab Engineer:
Task # 1.1:

Oscilloscope Calibration

Circuit/Block Diagram:

Procedure:

1. First connect the knob probe at the calibration port.

2. Check the calibration of the oscilloscope. Number of vertical boxes covered multiplied with the
volt/div must be equal to 2V.
3. If it equal to 2V then the oscilloscope is calibrated and for the use.

Conclusion:

Oscilloscope must be calibrated before the use otherwise it can give wrong readings.

Task # 1.2:

Measurement of signal parameters using oscilloscope

Circuit/Block Diagram:
Procedure:

1. Generate 1kw signal from the trainer.

2. View the signal on oscilloscope.

Conclusion:

1. The peak-to-peak voltage of the signal is 6V as viewed on the diagram.

Task # 1.3:

Noticing the change in the waveform by changing the input signal’s parameters

Circuit/Block Diagram:
Procedure:

1. By changing the amplitude of the signal peak-to-peak voltage changes.

Task # 1.4:

Using both channel inputs of the oscilloscope to view two signals alternately and simultaneously

Circuit/Block Diagram

Adding both signals:

Procedure:

 Two signals are generated of different amplitudes.

 First signal is of 1 KHz and 5V, and the signal is 1 KHz and 10V.
 In the first diagram they are viewed separately and in the second both are added and a new
signal is generate

Conclusion:

When we add two signals it takes a point

from the first wave and add to the second
wave at the same point and make a new
point or signal.

Answer the following

questions

1. What is the function of time/div and volt/div knobs?

The TIME/DIV controls the Horizontal scale and Volt/div controls the vertical scale.

2. Why do we calibrate an oscilloscope?

We calibrate the oscilloscope so that it gives actual wave form.

3. How do we adjust the calibration if it’s not calibrated?

To adjust the calibration set the VOLT/DIV to any point and then count the
number of boxes covered by the wave vertically.
Multiply the number of boxes to the volt/div; if it’s equal to 2V then the
oscilloscope is calibrated.
3. What are the different modes in an oscilloscope?
 There are four different modes in oscilloscope.
Ch 1: Signal of channel 1.
Ch 2: Signal of channel 2.
Dual: Both channel signal.
Add: Signal of ch1 and ch2 is added.
