1 When the combined thickness of the components is less than 50mm or the carbon Equivalent [CE} is
less than 0.45, preheat is not normally required when using MAG or Basic MMA

2 Certain materials may require preheat at a lower thickness. In this case, special instructions will be given

3 The combined thickness of a joint is calculated by adding all the thicknesses of the components
where they meet to form the joint. Examples are given below.

d1

d1

d1 d2 d2 d3
d2

d=d1 +d2 d=d1 +d2 d=d1 +d2+d3

4 If the combined thickness (d) is greater than 50mm, the carbon equivalent (see below) must be
acquired from the material certificates.

5 The combined thickness and the carbon equivalent are used to determine if preheat is needed.

6 The degree of preheat (if any) to be applied is found from Appendix C of BS EN 1011-2

7 Preheat is to be applied to the joint using propane torches or an approved alternative.

8 The area to be heated shall extend 100mm on either side of the joint.

9 The temperature shall be checked and monitored regularly using temperature indicating crayons
ensuring the temperature does not drop below that required.

10 If the temperature falls below the required level, the joint shall be re-heated to the correct temperature

Carbon equivalent (CE)= %C + %Mn/6 + (%Cr + %Mo + %V)/5 + (%Ni + %Cu)/15
