Disassemble Transmission

start by:

a) separation of torque converter from transmission

1. Remove input shaft (1). Remove all bolts (2) from the plate except the three bolts that have the
letter "S" on them.

2. Install two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts (3) as shown, then fasten a hoist. Remove planetary group
(4) from transmission house. Weight of the planetary group is 650 lb. (293 kg).

3. Remove three bolts (6), then remove No. 1 carrier assembly (5).

4. Remove the three bolts (8) that hold the No. 1 carrier assembly (7) to the plate.

5. Push pins (10) into the shafts (9). Remove the shafts (9), planet gears (12), bearings and washers
(11). Remove pins (10) from the shafts.

6. Remove spiral lockring (13) from bearing.

7. Install three 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (15) and remove bearing cage (14) from the plate.

8. Remove seal rings (16) from the cage.

9. Remove seal ring (17) from the plate.

10. Remove springs (18). Remove No. 1 clutch discs and plates (19).

11. Remove No. 1 clutch ring gear (20) and dowels (21).

12. Remove No. 1 clutch housing (23) and piston (22).

13. Remove piston (22) from No. 1 clutch housing (23). Remove two seal rings from the piston.

14. Remove springs (24). Remove No. 2 clutch discs and plates (25).

15. Push pins (27) into the carrier. Pull ring (26) together and remove the ring gear (28) for the No. 1
and No. 2 carrier. Remove ring gear (29) for the No. 2 clutch.

16. Remove the No. 2 clutch housing (30) and piston (31).

17. Remove piston (31) from the No. 2 clutch housing (30). Remove the two seal rings from the
housing.

18. Remove springs (32). Remove No. 3 clutch discs and plates (33).

19. Install two 5/16"-18 NC forged eyebolts (34) and fasten a hoist. Remove the No. 2 and No. 3
carrier, the No. 4 carrier and the No. 3 clutch as a unit.

20. Remove spiral lockring (35).

21. Remove the No. 2 and No. 3 carriers (36) from the No. 3 clutch housing. Remove the No. 3 clutch
ring gear (37).

22. Remove bolt (39) and retainer, then remove sun gears (38).

23. Remove O-ring seal (41) and seal ring (40) from the carrier assembly.

24. Push pins (43) into shafts (44). Remove planet gears (42), bearings, shafts (44) and washers (45).
Remove pins (43) from the shafts (44).

25. Remove spiral lockring (46). Remove bearing and shaft assembly (47).

26. Remove bearing (48) from shaft.

27. Remove piston (49) from the No. 3 clutch housing. Remove the seal rings from the piston.

28. Remove spiral lockring (51).

29. Remove the No. 3 clutch housing (50) from the No. 4 carrier.

30. Remove spiral lockring (52). Remove the bearing from the No. 3 clutch housing.

31. Remove seal ring (53) from the No. 4 carrier assembly.

32. Push pins (54) into the shafts (55). Remove planet gears (56), washers (57), bearings and shafts
(55). Remove pins (54) from shafts (55).

33. Remove the No. 4 clutch springs (58).

34. Remove No. 4 clutch discs and plates (59).

35. Push pins (60) into the carrier. Pull the ring (61) together and remove the No. 4 clutch ring gear
(62).

36. Remove No. 4 clutch housing (63).

37. Remove No. 4 clutch piston (64) from the housing. Remove the seal rings from the piston.

38. Remove No. 5 clutch springs (65). Remove No. 5 clutch discs and plates (66).

39. Remove the No. 5 clutch ring gear (67).

40. Lower planetary group so the spiral lockring (68) can be removed from the bottom.

41. Remove shaft assembly (69).

42. Remove four seal rings (71) from the shaft.

43. Remove spiral lockring (70), then remove gears (72) and (73).

44. Remove spiral lockring (74).

45. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forged eyebolts (75) in the No. 5 clutch housing. Fasten a hoist and
remove the No. 5 clutch housing and No. 5 carrier as a unit. Weight of the unit is 70 lb. (32 kg).

46. Remove No. 5 clutch piston (76) from the clutch housing.

47. Remove seal ring (77) from the No. 5 clutch piston.

48. Remove spiral lockring (78) that holds No. 5 clutch housing and No. 5 carrier together.

49. Remove No. 5 carrier (79) from the clutch housing. Remove seal ring (80) from the carrier.

50. Remove spiral lockring (81), then remove bearing (82) from the No. 5 clutch housing.

51. Remove two seal rings (83) from the No. 5 carrier assembly.

52. Push pins (84) into the shafts. Remove gears (85), shafts (86), bearings and washers (87). Remove
pins (84) from shafts (86).

53. Bend locks (90) back. Remove bolts (88), then remove plate (89).

54. Remove springs (91) from the housing.

55. Remove bolts (92) from the piston.

56. Remove piston (93).

59. Remove hub (96), then remove two O-ring seals (97) from the hub.

60. Remove the No. 6 clutch discs and plates (98).

61. Remove ring (99) from the output gear shaft.

62. Install three 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (101), and remove plate (100).

63. Remove bolts (102) that hold coupling (103) to the output gear (104).

64. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws (105), and remove the coupling from the output gear.

65. Remove ring (106) from the output gear.

66. Remove bearing (107) from the output gear.

67. Remove ring (108) then remove bearing (109) from the case.

68. Remove bolt (110) and retainer (111) from the yoke.

69. Remove O-ring seal (112) and yoke (113).

70. Remove bolts (114) from the adapter plate.

71. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (115) and remove adapter plate (116).

72. Remove lip type seal (117) from the adapter plate with tool group (A).

73. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws and remove bearing cage assembly (118).

74. Remove bearings (119) and races. Remove seal (120) from the bearing cage assembly.

75. Fasten a hoist to the transmission case and turn it over on opposite side. Put blocks under
transmission case.

76. Remove bolt (121) and retainer (122).

77. Remove yoke (123) and guard (124).

78. Remove bolts (125) from the retainer.

79. Remove lip type seal (126) and retainer (127).

80. Remove O-ring seal (128). Remove bolts (129) from bearing cage.

81. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws (130) and remove bearing cage (131).

82. Remove bearing (132) from the bearing cage.

83. Install retainer (122) and bolt (121) in output shaft. Fasten a hoist and strap as shown. Remove
output shaft (133) and gear from the case. Weight of the gear and shaft is 70 lb. (32 kg).

84. Remove sleeve (134) from the gear and shaft assembly.

85. Use a press and make a separation between bearing (135) and output gear shaft.

86. Remove bolts (137) and baffle (136) from the transmission case.

Assemble Transmission

1. Lower the temperature of bearing race (1), then install race in bearing cage.

2. Put cage (2) in position in the transmission case.

3. Heat bearing cones (3) and (4) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C), then install the bearing cones on
the output shaft.

4. Install output shaft (5) in the transmission case.

5. Install bearing race (6) for bearing cone (3) in bearing cage.

6. Install seal in adapter plate with the lip of the seal toward the bearing cones. Install seal with tool
group (A).

7. Install O-ring seal (8) on adapter plate. Install adapter plate (7) on bearing cage. Install bolts that
hold adapter plate to the bearing cage.

8. Install O-ring seal (9) on drive yoke. Install drive yoke (10) on the adapter plate.

9. Install retainer (11) and bolt (12).

10. Fasten a hoist to the transmission case and turn it over on the opposite side. Put blocks under the
transmission case.

11. Install baffle (13) and the bolts (14) that hold it. Install gear (15) on the output shaft.

12. Heat bearing (16) to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C) and install it on the output shaft.

13. Lower the temperature of bearing race (17) and install it in the bearing cage.

14. Install O-ring seals (19) on bearing cage (18), then install bearing cage on the transmission case.

15. Install lip type seal (20) into retainer (21) with tooling (A) as shown. Put retainer (21) in position
on the bearing cage.

16. Install bolts (24) that hold the retainer in position.

17. Put yoke (22) and guard (23) in position.

18. Install retainer (25) and bolt (26).

19. Install bearing race (27) and spiral lockring (28) in the transmission case.

20. Lower the temperature of bearing (29), then install it in the gear.

21. Install spiral lockring (30) on the bearing as shown.

22. Install coupling (32) on gear with the bolts (33) that hold it. Install plate (31).

23. Install bearing (34). Make an alignment of notch (35) with ball (36).

24. Install spiral lockring (37) over the bearing.

25. Install two O-ring seals (38) on the No. 6 clutch hub. Put No. 6 clutch hub (39) in position in the
coupling.

26. Install four discs and three plate assemblies (40). Start with a disc.

27. Install housing (41) on coupling.

28. Install seal rings (42) on the No. 6 clutch piston. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the seal rings.

NOTE: Make sure seal rings (42) are in the center of their grooves.

29. Install piston (43) in housing (41).

30. Install the bolts (45) that hold housing to the clutch hub.

31. Install springs (46) and plate (44).

32. Install locks (48) and bolts (47) that hold plate (44). Bend locks back against the bolts.

33. Install bearing (49) in the No. 5 clutch housing. Install bearing with the notch (50) down as
shown.

34. Install the spiral lockring (51) that holds bearing (49).

35. Put the bearings (55) in the gears (54) and install the three planet gears with a washer (53) on each
side of each gear.

36. Install the three shafts (52) with the holes in the shafts in alignment with the holes in the carrier.

37. Install the three pins (56).

38. Install seal rings (57) on the No. 5 carrier.

NOTE: Do not twist, bend or open the seal rings more than necessary. The seal rings must be free to
move in their grooves.

39. Install the No. 5 carrier (58) in the No. 5 clutch housing. Make sure that the ball (60) in carrier is
in alignment with notch (59) in the clutch housing.

40. Turn No. 5 clutch housing and install spiral lockring (62) and O-ring seal (61).

41. Install seal ring (63) on the No. 5 clutch piston. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the seal ring.

42. Install the No. 5 clutch piston (64) in the No. 5 clutch housing.

43. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts (65) in the No. 5 clutch housing. Fasten a hoist and install
the No. 5 clutch housing (66) as shown.

44. Install the ring (67) that holds the clutch housing and carrier in position.

45. Install retainer ring (68) and two gears (69) on gear shaft.

46. Install retainer ring (70) on the gear shaft.

47. Install four seal rings (71) on the gear shaft.

48. Install the output gear shaft assembly (72).

49. Install two 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolts in the No. 5 clutch housing. Fasten a hoist and lift the
planetary group. Install the retainer ring (74) that holds the output shaft in position.

50. Check the operation of the No. 6 clutch as follows:

a) Put some oil in openings (73) in the shaft.

b) Cut a piece of rubber 1" wide x 5" x 1/8" thick (25 mm x 127 mm x 3 mm) in size.

c) Put the piece of rubber around the shaft so that it is over the four holes in the shaft. Install and
tighten a hose clamp (76) of 2 in. (50 mm) diameter to hold the rubber in position.

d) Remove plug (75) from the end of the shaft.

e) Put air (free of water) with tool (B) into shaft to check the operation of No. 6 clutch piston.

NOTE: If No. 6 clutch piston is free, there should be about 1/8-1/4 in. (3 mm-6 mm) of travel in the
piston. If the piston does not move the No. 6 clutch has not been assembled correctly and must be
disassembled to find the cause.

f) Remove the hose clamp and the piece of rubber. Install the plug in the end of the shaft.

51. Lower the planetary group down on to wooden blocks. Remove the two eyebolts from the clutch
housing.

52. Install the ring gear (77) for the No. 5 clutch.

53. Install springs (79) and disc and plate assemblies (78) for No. 5 clutch.

54. Install seal rings (81) and (82) on the No. 4 clutch housing and piston. Install No. 4 clutch piston
(80) in the No. 4 clutch housing.

55. Install the No. 4 clutch housing (83) and piston.

56. Install the ring gear (84) for the No. 4 clutch.

57. Install the pin (85) for the retainer ring (86).

58. Install springs (88). Install three discs and two plates (87) for the No. 4 clutch. Start with a disc.

59. Install seal ring (91) on No. 3 clutch housing. Install bearing (90) in housing with the notch in
bearing in a down position.

60. Install spiral lockring (89) that holds bearing.

61. Put the bearings (94) in planet gears (96) and install the gears in carrier with a washer (93) on
each side of each gear.

62. Install the three shafts (92) with hole in shafts in alignment with holes in the No. 4 carrier. Install
the three pins (95).

63. Install the seal ring (97) on the No. 4 carrier. Put oil on the seal ring.

64. Put the No. 3 clutch housing (98) in position on the No. 4 carrier with the dowel in the carrier in
alignment with the notch in bearing (90).

65. Install spiral lockring (99) that holds the carrier to the housing.

66. Install seal ring (101) on No. 3 clutch piston. Install No. 3 clutch piston (100) in the clutch
housing.

67. Install ring gear (102) in the clutch housing.

68. Install bearing (103) on shaft.

69. Install shaft assembly (105) and the spiral lockring (104) that holds it in the No. 2 and No. 3
carrier.

70. Put a bearing (109) inside No. 2 planet gears (108). Put the gears in position in carrier with a
washer (107) on each side of each gear.

71. Put a bearing (109) inside No. 3 planet gears (111). Put the gears in position in carrier with a
washer (107) on each side of each gear.

72. Install the three shafts (106) in carrier with holes in shafts in alignment with holes in the carrier.

74. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 sun gears (113) in the carrier housing. Install bolt and retainer (112).

75. Install seal ring (114) on the No. 2 and No. 3 carrier. Put oil on seal ring. Install O-ring seal (115)
on the carrier.

76. Install the No. 2 and No. 3 carrier (116) in the clutch housing.

77. Turn the clutch housing over and install the spiral lockring (117) that holds the No. 2 and No. 3
carrier in position.

78. Install two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts in the No. 3 clutch housing. Fasten a hoist and install the
No. 2 and No. 3 carrier, No. 4 carrier and No. 3 clutch housing as a unit.

79. Install three discs and two plates (118) for the No. 3 clutch. Start with a disc.

80. Install the No. 3 clutch springs (119). Install the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 clutch pins (120).

81. Install seal rings (122) on the No. 2 clutch housing and piston.

84. Install ring gear (125) for the No. 2 clutch. Install the ring gear (124) for the No. 1 and No. 2
carrier.

85. Install roll pins (126) and retainer ring (127).

86. Install four discs and three plates (129) for the No. 1 and No. 2 clutch. Install springs (128) for the
No. 2 clutch.

87. Install seal rings (131) and (132) on the No. 1 clutch housing and piston. Install the No. 1 clutch
piston (130) in the clutch housing.

88. Install No. 1 clutch housing (133) and piston as shown.

89. Install ring gear (134) for the No. 1 clutch with the internal teeth closest to the top when installing.

90. Install pins (135) for the No. 1 and No. 2 clutch.

91. Install four discs and three plates (137) for the No. 1 clutch. Start with a disc. Install springs (136)
for the No. 1 clutch.

96. Install spiral lockring (143) that holds the bearing.

97. Put a bearing (147) inside each of the No. 1 planet gears (146).

98. Put the gears (146) in position in carrier with a washer (145) on each side of each gear.

99. Install the three shafts (144) with the holes in the shafts in alignment with the holes in the carrier.

100. Install the pins (148) in the carrier.

101. Put the No. 1 carrier (149) in position on the plate. Install the three bolts that hold the carrier to
the cage.

102. Fasten a hoist and put the plate and No. 1 carrier in position on the No. 1 clutch housing as
shown. Install three bolts as shown.

103. Check the operation of the clutches (except No. 6 clutch) with tool (B).

104. Put oil in the clutch ports before the travel of the clutch pistons are checked. The clutch ports
shown are: No. 1 clutch (150), No. 2 clutch (151), No. 3 clutch (152), No. 4 clutch (154) and No. 5
clutch (153).

NOTE: If the clutch pistons are free to move, there must be about 1/8 to 1/4 in. (3 mm to 6 mm) of
travel in each of the pistons. If the piston does not move, the clutch has not been assembled correctly
and must be disassembled to find the cause.

105. Install two 5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolts in the plate assembly. Fasten a hoist and put the planetary
group (155) in position in the transmission case.

106. Install the remainder of bolts (156). Install the input shaft (157). Tighten the bolts to a torque of
85 ± 5 lb.ft. (115 ± 7 N·m).
