Questions :

1) What are those salient goals of Dr. Jose Rizal in writing the annotations of Antonio Morgas book
the Sucesos de Las Islas Filipinas?
The annotation of Rizal on Morga’s book generally entails opposition to some beliefs
written by the Spanish lawyer. His goal was to correct the distorted facts about the Philippines
from an Indio’s viewpoint. It was his intention to emphasize that the Philippines already had a
culture long before the Spaniards came which is in contrast to what Morga has written .
More importantly, he wanted to awaken the unconscious Filipinos who were deemed to be
blinded by the presence of the colonizers.

2) What are those significance of Dr. Antonio de Morga's book Sucesos Delas Islas Filipinas?
The content is based on documentary, research and personal experiences of Morga. As
the title translates “Events in the Philippine islands”, it discusses the political, social and
economic aspect of what has happened during the Spaniard invasion. Thus, its significance lies
within its content being one of the first books that has written about the treasured history of the
Philippines.

3) Why did Dr. Jose Rizal place an importance in the reprinting of the book Sucesos Delas Islas
Filipinas?
Rizal was told to write a book about the Philippines and its history. Driven by his desire,
he then dedicated his time and effort to know exactly the conditions of the Philippines during
the Spanish regime. He believed that in order to fully grasp the present, we need to examine the
past, which is why he gave so much importance in reprinting Morga’s work as it recorded our
country’s past. It’s also his way to counter the delusions of the colonizers about our country and
countrymen. More so, he wanted to eradicate the brand the colonizers gave us, that we are an
inferior race as we only have little intelligence.
4) Considering the different analytical perspective on the Noli me Tangmere, What are the
implications for the teaching of this novel?

Notwithstanding the danger, Rizal unmasked the inhumane and unethical leadership of
the Spaniards through publishing. He exposed the abuses, injustices and exploitations both by
the government and the clergy. Through his work, he ignited the fighting spirit of the Filipinos to
seek freedom from its oppressor. This heroic act of Rizal implicates that violence is not the only
way to get out of such situation. He awakens the unconsciousness of the Filipinos with the use
of his pen. Who would have thought that pen can be mightier than the sword? This remarkable
novel gives inference that voicing out our concern can make a difference. This teaching of Rizal
can be seen even up to this time which is evidenced by our “freedom of speech” privilege.
