CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter shows the design and arrangement made in the research study.

Research setting

Batangas State University (BSU) was established by virtue of Republic Act 9045,

(2001). The act integrated the Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology and all its

campuses including Jose P. Laurel Polythenic College in Malvar and Apolinario R.

Apacible school of Fisheries in Nasugbu. It also prescribed the university mandates

and authority of its governing body, the Board of Regeants (BOR). BatStateU is a multi-

campus university. It has over 14,000 students in every campus.

Research design

This study used a descriptive survey method to know the competency level of

Batangas State University students on English Language. Specifically, a survey

approach can easily understand the characteristics to compare if whether Batangas

State Univerisity students either excels or behind the ranks of reading and writing

comprehension. Each respondent will be given a survey questionnaire that would define

their competency in utilization of their knowledge in reading and writing in English

language. The data gathered through our respondents are expected to form

understanding about the school’s effectiveness on english language subject and its

student’s reading and writing comprehension level.


Description of participants

The subject of the study are students from grade-9 students to understand the

effectiveness of English Language to Batangas State University students. Researchers

will conduct the study on the respondent’s lunch or free time in order for them to have

the convenience of our research study. All of grade-9 students is need to suffice the

data gathered by the study. This makes the students as the respondents of the study

that provides the information needed in the study.

Data gathering instrument

The instrument that is going to be use in this study is a survey questionnaire that

will be distributed to 8 sections of Grade 9 students from Batangas State University. The

questionnaire is divided into four parts. The first part of the questionnaire was for the

profile of the respondents according to: gender, age, and section. The second part is for

the level of confidence of each respondents in using English Language. The third part is

the level of academic of each respondents in each subjects such as Science,

Mathematics, and English where they will be given some questions in each subjects.

The fourth part is for the level of competency of each respondents in understanding

English Language.

In the end, the questionnaire will determine the competency of Batangas State

University Junior Highschool students in utilization of English Language in

comprehensive reading and writing and how it is useful to researchers in gathering the

required data for the study.


Data gathering procedure

A survey questionnaire setup is used to source data from group individuals.

Survey questionnaires will be distributed individually per section and will be retrieved

immediately after the respondents are done completing the survey questionnaires. The

data gathered will be interpreted through the respondent’s response to further analyze

the data for its findings and conclusion.

Statistical treatment of data

Summary statistics were used in order to analyze the averages, measurement of

the data values and the divergence of the data values from normal distribution patterns.

This measures the entire spread of data values from minimum to maximum range in

order to differentiate data gathered by the study.

The study used the following statistical tools:

Weighted Mean. This is to determine the typicality of responses. The responses

were given equivalent weighted values which 1 as the lowest and 5 as the highest

value. Corresponding performance description for each value also provided.

Relative Frequency. This was used to determine the perceptions and attitudes of

the students-respondents.
