Hamid (BEED 3) PART 2 COMPILATION

IT RAINED SATURDAY AFTERNOON (Antonio S. Gabila)

1. What is the author’s purpose in repeating the line "It rained at three Saturday
afternoon"?
- It was repeated for maybe they got mad that why it always rained at three Saturday.
Every time they decided to play at Saturday it was ruin because the rain starts to fall
every three at Saturday.
2. Show the parallelism between the lines quoted from the mad boy's songs and the
narrator's comments after each one.
- “Don’t take away my dreams” this only shows in the mad boy’s song that the only
thing he could is to plead everyone through this song not to take his dreams, and it
only quoted in the mind of the players that they can do something about their
dreams, that no one could take it unless they do something to make their dreams
come true.
3. The rain which made them pause and pay attention to the boy enabled them to arrive at
certain realizations about themselves. What are these?
- It made them think that they are not the most unlucky human in the world. After they saw
the boy’s mad song, and after seeing the boy in that state, they all realize that they are not
as unlucky as that boy, they realize that they can do more in life, and have a plenty of
chances for they were in a normal state. Unlike the boy, who only had to sing so that no one
could take away his dreams.

THE BLACK MONKEY (Edith L. Tiempo)

1. What frightens Nena to stay at home?
- The thing she was frightened of is the sound of monkeys out there. The sound like it
was very angry, hungry or whatever it makes it sounds like that.
2. What was the fear of Marina and the two other women when they heard an alarm from
the camp of the guerillas?
- The fear of Marina whenever she heard the alarm from the camp of the guerillas
made her sick and paralyzed on one side, she had to stay where she was liability to
no one in case of danger. Listening closely for several nights, she had learned to
distinguish the noises made by the monkey in the tree nearest to her door.
Whenever it made sounds at night, it leads them to discomfort, where they can no
longer sleep peacefully.
3. Was there a sign of regret when Nena successfully ended the life of the monkey? Why
or why not?
- I think there is no sign that she regretted it, after she ended the life of the monkey,
she slightly made a smile in her like it says that there’s nothing she will scared. As if
nothing.
4. What disturbed the attention of the neighborhood during the night?
- It is actually the loud sound of the monkeys during at night. This disturbed them
from being asleep in the night. They even feared whenever they hear the sound
made by the monkeys.
5. How Carlo did appeased his wife when he heard her complain of the noise during the
night?
- He then agreed to let his wife hold the gun while he was in his work. Making sure that
Nena still know how to use and shoot a gun, he even show Nena about an unlocked gun,
and he explained to her it will not shoot unless you unlock the gun.

SERVANT GIRL (Estrella D. Alfon)

1. What incident happened when Rosa was on her way to bleach the clothes? Narrate
briefly.
- As Rosa gets back to her washing, she gathered the clothes she had to bleach, and
piled them into a basin she balanced on her head. Now as she crossed the street,
she passed some women hanging clothes on a barbed-wire fence to dry. There are
some dogs chasing each other on the street, without noticing one dog passed swiftly
very close to her. As she looked down there she saw a dog near her heels, an
instinctive fear of dog made her want to dodge the heedlessly running dog. To make
it shorten, Rosa fell down to the street hardly that makes her not able to stand up on
her own. But her only concern is on the clothes she had to bleach. She did not want
to be slap again by the mistress.
2. Did Rosa get mad when a cochero tried to help her? Why or why not?
- No she didn’t, she just let the cochero help her and heal her wounds.
3. Was Rosa able to explain to the mistress the cause of the broken bottle? Why or why
not?
- No, she didn’t have the chance to explain why it was broken, for her mistress had a
sudden anger at the waste and the loss made her strike out with closed fists, not
caring where her blows landed until the girl was in tears. It was often touched her
when she saw Rosa crying and cowering, but now the woman was too angry to pity.
4. How did the cochero and Rosa meet again?
- When she was walking to and fro without direction, she felt the swish of a horse almost
blushing against her. Then she looked up angrily at the cochero’s laughing remark about his
whip missing her beautiful bust. Finally they’ve met again.

GABU (Carlos A. Angeles)

1. Give the message of the poem.
- The message of the poem is to remind us the meaning of life, that life is not just
eating a meal three times a day and then solve. No, it’s not life, it’s part of doing and
taking care of your life. Life is full of challenges, a challenge that makes one a good
and a better person, a challenge that would make one a strong person. In the poem,
life was compared to a sea, sea is not just a sea you can see on its nature, but sea
has a lot of characteristics, as well as life.
2. Describe the setting of the poem.
- A place in Ilocos Norte near the sea. Often, when typhoons occur, places like this are
affected greatly, especially when tsunami occur.
3. Speculate why the poet chose this theme.
-
The poet choses its theme for us to be able to understand that life is not easy. Like
sea, sea is not just a sea, it is not just how people seen it as beautiful one, sea has a
lot of things needed to be discover, so as well as life too.
4. How is the poem compared to the life of man?
- Sea has waves, that wave shows that the sea is constantly moving, but always towards
the shore. Life is bounded by time, always moving, but what we all desire is a stable and
eternal ending. The shore there is considered as the afterlife.

BADOC (Carlos A. Angeles Tacloban, Leyte)

1. Paraphrase the poem by stanza and give each meaning.
I am aware of roots
A continuing or beginning
A pattern for survival impertinently bared
Before the mind shield of indifference
Green the color for survival
- When we think of something green, we think of it as living, like as grass you can
actually say that the grass is growing because of its color which is green.
Some theoretical ineptitude unbalance me
before the desolated scene.
Time ripening in seed
The flowering of atom bud
Your faith that orchards you among the ruins
-
2. What scene is evoked in the poem?
3. To whom was the author speaking?
4. Give your interpretation of the poem.

THE WHITE HORSE OF ALIH (Alvarez Enriquez) (Source: Enriquez Mtg. The white horse of Alih
and other stories. Quezon City: New Day Publishers, 1985.)
1. What two conflicting beliefs can be seen in the story? Differentiate them.
- Firstly, is that only by killing could wash away their shame, secondly,
2. What was in Alih's mind why?
-
3. What was the reaction of Alih when Omar narrated the story of their lives?
- Maybe he was sad as he knew about the narration of Omar about their lives, about
how tragic the ending was.
4. What type of ending does the story have – tragedy or a happy ending? Explain.
- For me, it is a tragic ending, both of them had planned to kill the people around but
because of one girl whom he loved made him killed his brother. Even if he did not
accidentally kill his brother, still it is a tragic ending, if both of them succeed, then they
would have killed more than one person.
