Answer the following questions:
The aqueous solution of sodium acetate is basic. Explain.

Sodium acetate is a salt derived from a strong base NaOH and a weak acid CH 3COOH.
When CH3COONa is placed in the water we have a basic solution. The qualitative reason
why sodium acetate gives a basic solution is this : CH3COONa is a strong electrolyte and
its dissociation is 100% so we have CH3COO- and Na +.

CH3COO- disturbs the water equilibrium ,

H2O ---> H + + OH -
by tying up some H + and thereby reducing the concentration of hydrogen ion below the
concentration of hydroxide ion.

A solution containing 0·5 g of KCl dissolves in 100 g of water and freezes at – 0·24 oC.
Calculate the degree of dissociation of the salt. (K f for water = 1.86 oC) Atomic weights [K
= 39, Cl = 35·5]

The equilibrium constant for the reaction:

N2(g) + 3H 2(g) ⇌ 2NH 3(g) at 715 K, is 6·0 × 10 -2.

If, in a particular reaction, there are 0·25 mol L-1 of H2 and 0·06 mol L-1 of NH 3 present,
calculate the concentration of N2 at equilibrium.
