Sashes

Hoods shall have transparent movable sashes constructed of shatter-resistant, flame-resistant

material that is compatible with the materials and processes to be used in the hood, and
capable of being moved to close the entire front face.

Vertical-rising sashes are preferred. Multiple sashes may be installed within the same track.

Sashes may offer extra protection to lab workers since they can be positioned to act as a

UC Practice
ANSI Z9.5 3.1.1

A force of five pounds shall be sufficient to move vertically and/or horizontally moving doors and
sashes.

Sticky sashes and doors are not moved, so they become useless. These specifications result
from decades of experience.

AIHA Z9.5 3.1.1

Automatic sash closers with proximity sensors may be considered to allow for energy savings
when the hood is not in operation. Note that a user?s training program may be more effective in
achieving this desirable end.
