Case Study

Detrick Designs Pty Ltd provides consultancy and installation services for kitchen designs within the greater
Sydney region to clients who require new kitchens or require their existing kitchens remodelled. They have
been in operation for 15 years.

They currently promote their services via their shop frontage on George Street, advertisements in house
magazines and on selected radio stations. They now wish to develop an e-commerce website to promote
their services, to diversify their marketing push and also to increase sales. They have no existing website or
online presence.

Detrick Designs works with a large number of kitchen providers, industry part suppliers, and in contact with a
number of contract plumbers, cabinet makers and electricians to undertake supplementary work when fitting
kitchens depending on the client’s needs.
The organisational structure chart of Detrick Designs Pty Ltd is provided below.

Barry Hart is the owner and CEO of the company. He has a keen interest in the project and was the person
who presented the idea to his team. He wishes to establish the system as quickly as possible, but it needs to
be designed properly before it is released. He has a keen interest in the design aspect of the website.

Tina Hopkins manages the kitchen builds including liaising with all third-party kitchen suppliers and
contractors. She co-ordinates the scheduling in relation to the clients’ jobs, ensuring that all required
components of the job are in place to service the client on the agreed date. She has a small team of
production staff to help with the production requirements.

Gina Hay manages the accounts for both the client and supplier payments. She is the lone accounts person
in the company. The suppliers invoice for services or goods provided, and Gina invoices the clients for jobs
completed. The clients are expected to pay a 50% deposit upfront when a job is booked. It ensures that
anything that has been used is paid for to the suppliers to protect the company financially, in case a client
cancels the job.

Tony Robbins is the IT administrator. There is no other IT staff. He handles the computer network and the
company’s database ensuring that they are maintained and serviced as and when required. Tony has some
web skills in HTML5 and CSS, but doesn’t know much about server-side programming languages. He will be
responsible for maintaining the e-commerce website when it is released.

/conversion/tmp/scratch/478332458.docx Page | 7
Details of the network that Tony manages are provided below:

 All staff have laptops running Windows 10.

 The laptops connect to a Windows Server 2012 R2 server for authentication and shared resources.

 A small SQL Server database is used as for recording customer and supplier details and for sales
purposes.

 MYOB is also used by the accounts team to balance the books.

 An intranet is used for company policies and forms.

Steve Perry is the sales manager and controls a small sales team. The sales team handle all sales enquiries,
and work closely with the production team to cost up the clients jobs. He is also in charge of producing the
sales collateral and developing the advertisements used for promotional purposes.

Barry Hart is the owner and CEO of the company and was the person who presented the idea of an e-
commerce website to his team. He wants to get it up and running as quickly as possible, but it needs to be
fully functional and tested before it is released. He has a keen interest in the design aspect of the website.

The Project

Barry really doesn’t have a business plan but he has identified the following critical issues that need to be
factored into the design of the website:

 Competition has been fierce between competitive companies in the last few years. So, the
identifications of what the competition is doing and how they are doing it is very important when
considering the design of the website.

 The expansion plans to further states to try and build a national brand.

 The website design is of critical importance because the company is designed based.

 A large number of payment options should be made available and be easy to use eg., Paypal, Credit
Card etc.,.

 The website should be used as a marketing tool to increase people’s awareness of the brand and to
ensure that the company has a loyal band of customers.

Barry wants a design software tool included in the website that allows customers to upload photos of their
current kitchens that can be altered using the software colours and additional components can be added. He
has found a company called “Bespoke Designs” which produces the software and his contact at that
company is Geoff Daniels who is the lead software designer. There are a number of requirements that must
be integrated into the design of the website to include the software.

Tony has researched third-party payment providers and their products that can be integrated into the website
to handle customer payments. He has selected what he thinks is the best product which is called “Speedy
Transactions”. This software is produced and managed by Easy Payments which is an Australian based
company. His contact at the company is Hugh Hansen, the lead software designer.
