The Project

School

Designing a school can be more of a challenge than anticipated. Not only are schools a place for
education, but also should serve as a place to encourage inspiration and curiosity. Aside from
developing a building capable of supporting these two factors, schools must also be designed with
durability and safety in mind due to the wear-and-tear they will be exposed to over the years.

Modern school building designs can vary greatly in appearance, from modest private schools with a
single main building, to expansive public schools that may house hundreds of children. However, all
great modern school building designs should share similarities in safe structural designs, non-toxic and
eco-friendly materials, and features that promote a more comfortable, stimulating atmosphere.

History

Around the turn of the century, many books were written on the appropriate design and construction of
school buildings, in which environmental systems are covered in depth. Although many of these texts
focus heavily on plans and layout suggestions, there was a great deal of attention paid to the proper
lighting and ventilation of classrooms and schools as a whole. Indeed, one text (Hamlin, 1910) includes
three separate articles on heating and ventilation for different school contexts: “Exposed Localities”,
“Congested City Districts”, and “Inexpensive Schoolhouses”. During this time, there was less mention of
the principles of acoustical design and control, except a brief reference to the importance of choosing
flooring materials and other related finishes to reduce footfall noise.

Project Objectives

 It focuses on structural analysis and design in accordance with the codes, guidelines, standards
and specifications of National Structural Code of the Philippines 2015.

 To design a structure through application of theories, concepts, and principles of Prestressed

Concrete Design.

 To be able to use modern applications in the design process such as AutoCad, Sketch-up, STAAD
and MS Excel for design computations.

The Client

The client of this proposed school is the school officials especially the teachers and the students. This
proposed school building will be constructed and settled in Tayuman, Manila with the help of the local
government specifically the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and it will also benefit
the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with this additional educational facility.
Scope and Limitations

The design is based in standards that conform to the National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP),
2015 Edition and the National Building Code of the Philippines (NBCP), 2015 Edition. The design project
will cover Prestressed Concrete Design, the structural analysis and its design computations. It includes
the load analysis to determine the maximum loading of the structure withstands and sizes and design of
the building elements such as slab, beams and column. It also includes architectural and structural plans
of the project such as vicinity map, elevations, perspective, and floor plan, floor framing plan, column
location plan, and slab plan.
