About This Product

This product represents a collaboration between ASHRAE and SMACNA to provide design
professionals the technical information required to design and implement seismic restraints for
piping and duct systems. The package includes the following:

1. ASHRAE Products
a. 2003 ASHRAE Handbook—HVAC Applications
• Chapter 54, Seismic and Wind Restraint Design (I-P)
• Chapter 54, Seismic and Wind Restraint Design (SI)
b. A Practical Guide to Seismic Restraint (ASHRAE 1999)
• Chapter 5, Connections
• Chapter 7, Ductwork
• Chapter 8, Suspended Piping
2. SMACNA Products
a. Seismic Restraint Manual Guidelines for Mechanical Systems, 2nd ed., 1998
with Addendum No.1 September 2000

The information provided in the ASHRAE documents provides the design professional with the
procedures for performing calculations for attachment of piping and duct systems to the
supporting structure. Also included are representative bracing details, layout examples, and
tables indicating required bracing spacing, along with tables specifying the size of required
structural members, including anchorage.

The SMACNA manual is presented in its entirety. This industry and ANSI standard has been
used by system designers and contractors for over twenty years as a proven method for the
proper bracing of piping and ductwork. The manual has been developed and updated by a
structural engineering firm under contract with SMACNA and is approved for use in hospitals
and health care facilities in California by the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and
Development (OSHPD).

The SMACNA manual is an application document. Included are specific details for the bracing
of piping and ductwork, along with tables of the required structural elements and their spacing
requirements, including anchorage to the supporting structure.

This combined product provides electronic links between the ASHRAE publication data and the
SMACNA manual. The user is initially directed to the ASHRAE components. As the user
proceeds through the ASHRAE material, links are indicated to parallel or similar application data

in the SMACNA manual. The user can then choose the information and data to include in
construction documents.

While many of the details shown in this product are similar in nature, others provide variations
that accomplish the same result. Nothing is intended to suggest the use of one detail or
procedure over another. The choice of material to be used is left with the design professional.
