1 The kinetic theory describes the behaviour of a gas in terms of
the properties of its molecules. Using the kinetic theory, explain
the following statements.
a A gas in a container at room temperature exerts a pressure on
the walls of the container.
b When more of the same gas, at room temperature, is
introduced to the same container, the pressure increases.
c What experimental evidence is there to suggest that there
might be an absolute zero of temperature at −273 °C?
2 If a certain quantity of gas, at constant temperature, has a
volume of 30 cm3 at a pressure of 1 × 105 Pa, what is its volume
when the pressure is:
a 2 × 105 Pa
b 5 × 105 Pa?
3 A mass of gas occupies a volume of 200 cm³ at a temperature
of 27 °C and a pressure of 1 atmosphere. Calculate the volume
when the pressure is doubled at constant temperature.
4 On aerosol cans there is a warning not to leave them in strong
sunlight or to throw them onto a fire when they are empty.
Give physical reasons for this warning.
5 Charles’ law states that for a fixed mass of gas at constant
pressure the volume is directly proportional to the temperature.
Describe how you would test the law experimentally.
6 An air bubble has a volume of 2.5 cm3 when it is released at a
depth of 40 m of water. What will be its volume when it reaches
the surface of the water? Assume that its temperature is constant
and that atmospheric pressure = 10 m of water.
