Introduction: Introduction:
• The module will concentrate on the Processing Unit.
• The Processing Unit executes machine instructions
and coordinates the activities of other units.
• The processing unit is also called as Instruction Set
Processor (ISP), or simply the Processor.
• We will examine internal structure of processor and
how it performs the tasks of fetching, decoding, and
executing instructions of a program.
• The processing unit used to be called the Central
Processing Unit (CPU).
• As modern processors have several processing units,
the term ‘central’ is less appropriate.

Fundamental Concepts:
• The registers, the ALU, and the interconnecting bus
are collectively referred to as the datapath.
An instruction can be executed by performing one or
more of the following operations:
1. Transfer a word of data from one processor register
to another or to the ALU
2. Perform an arithmetic or a logic operation and store
the result in a processor register
3. Fetch the contents of a given memory location and
load them into a processor register
4. Store a word of data from a processor register into a
given memory location
