Day of Lesson: 11/6/19 Time of Lesson: 11am

Lesson Objectives/Learning Goals:

SWBAT co-write a “How To” as a class and revise it as needed.
SWBAT continue to write their own “How To’s” and revise as needed.
SWBAT work with their writing partner to share ideas and help their partner revise as needed.

Content Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the
topic, and provide some sense of closure.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.8
With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather
information from provided sources to answer a question.
ELD 2.I.10. Expanding Write short literary texts (e.g., a story) and informational texts (e.g.,
an informative text on the life cycle of an insect) collaboratively with an adult (e.g., joint
construction of texts), with peers, and with increasing independence.

Lesson Activities/Procedure:
-First, I will read a mentor text to the students about a “How To”.
-Next, I will review our anchor chart on how to write a “How To” piece.
-Then, we will create a “How To” together as a class on chart paper.
-Our “How To” will be about how to draw a pumpkin.
-The students will turn and talk about what they think the steps are for drawing a pumpkin.
-Then I will have students share ideas for steps and drawings and add them to the chart paper.
-After we are done co-creating a “How To” I will remind students about the detail in our
mentor text and ask if there are any details we can add to our “How To”.
-We will add details as needed to our “How To”.
-When we are finished, we will read it through one last time.
-Students will then get their writing folder and sit with their partner to talk about what they
will be writing today.
-Once they are done sharing to each other, they will start to write their own “How To’s”.

Instructional Strategies:
-Class writing will help students learn as a group to build community.
-The review of our anchor charts will help remind students what their task is and how to
implement it.
-Partner writing will help students stay focused with the small group and receive help from a
peer on ideas and revising.
