Syllabus
This unit introduces management theory and how this theory may be applied to practice. After examining the
current landscape of management practice, students analyse the major functions of management and some key
areas of management practice. The unit also introduces some key skills required of contemporary managers.
Specifically, students are required to prepare solutions to management problems and develop team-working
skills.
Introduction
Welcome to Fundamentals of Management. The aim of this unit is to provide you with a basic understanding of
management practices and processes, so that you may enter the workforce with an ability to comprehend why
managers behave and act in the ways they do. We hope that you find the unit of practical benefit and enjoy the
learning experience.
Unit Learning Outcomes

All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These

Learning Activities
The Fundamentals of Management teaching pattern consists of weekly workshops. The lectures for this unit are
also available online and students are encouraged to watch the iLecture before they attend their weekly
workshops. The workshops will be conducted for groups of students and are focused on providing additional
information and explanation over and above what is provided by the iLecture and lecture slides that are available
on Blackboard. The workshops are dedicated to the practical application of the theoretical issues discussed in the
iLecture the previous week. Workshop activities include discussion of multiple-choice questions and case studies,
as well as the completion of additional various activities. The workshops are designed to be interactive and
students are required to participate in the activities.

1. Feedback Assessment - Essay Plan (10%):

l You must choose topic 1 or 2 (below)
l The word count is 450 words ±10% or ±45 words. The word count excludes the reference list
but includes your in-text citations. Marks will be deducted if students do not follow the word
count guideline.
l Your essay plan will be handed back to you before you submit your final essay.
Your essay plan must consist of paragraphs of the following:
Introduction (about 100 words)
1. Make a general statement about the topic
2. Provide background information
3. State the position you will argue for—your thesis statement
4. Mention the points you will cover in your essay
Body – developing your argument (about 250 words)

1. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence
2. Develop each main idea by making e.g. comparisons and contrasts, using referenced
explanations, examples, definitions etc.
3. Conclude by summarising or linking the idea being discussed to the next paragraph.
Conclusion (about 100 words)

1. Restate your position/thesis statement
2. Sum up the main points made in each paragraph
3. Finish with a strong statement about the wider context



Pick one of the 2 topics:

Topic 1

Managers are often faced with the need to make ethical decisions, affecting their organisations and
both internal and external stakeholders. Assume you are a top manager at a large aerospace
manufacturer. Your well-known company manufactures and sells commercial passenger aircraft to
airlines all over the world. A senior engineer in the company has just alerted you to a technical issue in
your most popular narrow-body airliner utilised by hundreds of airlines across the world. The technical
issue relates to a software error with sensors that could adversely affect airplane safety or operation.
The senior engineer has recommended that you delay any announcement of this technical issue to the
aviation authorities, media and airlines until a thorough investigation is completed. This technical
investigation is expected to take a minimum of four weeks and will confirm if the plane’s safety or
operation is adversely impacted. In this unit, we have discussed the four ethical decision making rules.
Please discuss all four ethical decision making rules. Choose one of the four ethical decision making
rules to explain your decision on whether or not to agree to the request from the senior engineer.
OR
Topic 2
Pick one successful and one unsuccessful organisation you are familiar with. Compare and contrast
how top managers at these two organisations effectively and ineffectively utilised Fayol’s four
functions in their firms.
Hint: Please pick organisations that are well known. Please check your organisation with your tutor
if you are unsure. Your tutor needs to be aware of your chosen organisation as your tutor is
marking your paper. Please consult your tutor by week two (week beginning 5 August 2019).
2. Written Assignment – final essay submission (30%)
l Topic 1 or 2
l Word count is 1,500 words ±10% or 150 words. The word count excludes the reference list but
includes your in-text citations. Marks will be deducted if students do not follow the word count
guideline.



l Please note your tutor’s comments on your earlier 450 word essay plan. Your tutor will mark
your final submission after reviewing your marked essay plan. To score a good mark in your
final essay submission, please act on the various suggestions/comments made by your tutor in
your essay plan. Marks will be deducted if students ignore their tutor’s comments.

To achieve a passing grade you must satisfy the following:
l Information literacy skills – Gather, critically assess and use information to build an argument.
You need to state your argument and critically analyse the statement.
l Referencing – You must use in-text referencing and include a reference list. You must use the
Chicago 17 referencing guide, available from the library website.

Your essay must:
l contain an introduction, thesis statement, main contents section and a conclusion.
l be concise, clear and well edited. Your essay must conform to the structure discussed in the
Communication Skills Centre High Flyer number 7.

l be fully referenced; at least EIGHT different sources of information (e.g. book, edited book, www,
journal article from the full-text databases, current affairs magazine, newspaper). WWW
references can contribute to a maximum of ONE-THIRD of the total number of reference
sources utilised. The use of Peer-Reviewed Scholarly Journals is required. Online academic
databases accessed through the library website such as Proquest DO NOT count as (www)
internet references.
l The use of Wikipedia is NOT ALLOWED.

3. Case study assignment (20%) – GROUP 800 word summary AND 8 minute presentation
800 word summary to be submitted through Turnitin by the due date and time.

You must remember that a significant focus of this assessment is on finding and using information;
therefore you are required to consult and fully reference at least six different sources of information

Presentation:
l You are encouraged to use PowerPoint slides to deliver your presentations.
l The maximum time allocated to each group is 8 minutes. This time limit will be strictly enforced
by your tutors. Marks will be deducted if groups exceed the 8 minute time limit.
l Groups are allowed to have a maximum of 6 power point slides for their 8 minute
presentation. Marks will be deducted if groups deliver more than 6 power point slides during
their 8 minute presentation.
l Groups that are presenting need to attend class to deliver their presentation and remain to
listen to other presentations.

l Marks will be deducted if students do not contribute to their group.
l Please note that you are required to keep and submit the minutes of your group’s weekly
meetings. A different group member must chair the meeting each week. The minutes should be
handed to your tutor on the due date and time.
l The following items must be recorded in the minutes of all meetings: Time, date, and location of
the meeting. Attendees Review of action items from last meeting.

l Planning and allocating work before next meeting.
l Please view a copy of the Self-Peer Assessment form on Blackboard.
l You are required to make an assessment of how you and your group members performed in
completing the assignment. You must complete the Self-Peer Assessment form (available
on Blackboard) and submit it in the class to your tutor in a sealed envelope. Please note
these forms and the information they contain will be kept strictly confidential. Only your tutor
and the Unit Coordinator will see your forms. Your comments and grades will not be

communicated to any other person.

4. Final Examination (40%)
The examination will be held during the University Examination Period. Information about the exam will be
provided during the semester.
The examination will test your knowledge, your ability to apply the knowledge and analytical skills you
have developed in Fundamentals of Management.

l A total mark of 50% or higher for the semester.

Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning
outcomes, and that students work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation
of assessments are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from

Late assessment
Where the submission of a late assessment is permitted, late penalties will be consistently applied in this unit.
Where a late assessment is permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the Assessment
Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. For assessment items submitted within the first 24 hours after the due date/time, students will be penalised
by a deduction of 5% of the total marks allocated for the assessment task;
2. For each additional 24 hour period commenced an additional penalty of 10% of the total marks allocated
for the assessment item will be deducted; and
3. Assessment items submitted more than 168 hours late (7 calendar days) will receive a mark of zero.
Where late assessment is NOT permitted for an assessment item or the entirety of the unit (refer to the
Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline) and the student does not have an approved assessment extension:
1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will receive a mark of zero.



Assessment extension
Where an application for an assessment extension is permitted for an assessment item(s) within this unit (refer to
the Assessment Schedule table in this Unit Outline):
1. A student unable to complete an assessment item by/on the due date/time due to exceptional
circumstances beyond the student's control, must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment
Extension Application Form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as
prescribed by the Academic Registrar.
2. The student will be expected to lodge the form with supporting documentation to the school representative
nominated below.
3. Failure to submit this application in a timely manner, may impact upon the assessment process. For
applications that are declined this may have significant ramifications on the possible marks awarded.
4. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the due date/time of the assessment item
where the student is able to provide a verifiable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the
application prior to the assessment due date/time.

1. All assessment items submitted after the due date/time will be subject to late penalties or receive a mark of

Further Assessment Student Eligibility:
A student is eligible for consideration for further assessment if they:
l are enrolled in a unit within their first 200 credit points of study in their course OR in a unit in their final
