Syllabus
This unit introduces management theory and how this theory may be applied to practice. After examining the
current landscape of management practice, students analyse the major functions of management and some key
areas of management practice. The unit also introduces some key skills required of contemporary managers.
Specifically, students are required to prepare solutions to management problems and develop team-working
skills.

Introduction
Welcome to Fundamentals of Management. The aim of this unit is to provide you with a basic understanding of
management practices and processes, so that you may enter the workforce with an ability to comprehend why
managers behave and act in the ways they do. We hope that you find the unit of practical benefit and enjoy the
learning experience.

Unit Learning Outcomes

All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These
inform an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills
and capabilities which employers would value in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the
Graduate Capabilities through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process
referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes notify you of what you are expected to know,
understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully
designed to test your knowledge of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of
the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.
Your course has been designed so that on graduating you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Capabilities
through the assurance of learning processes in each unit.
Graduate Capabilities
On successful completion of this unit students can:
addressed
1 Apply management theory to practice situations

2 Write clear, concise and coherent arguments relating to management theory

and practice
3 Assess and prepare solutions to practice situations in management

iLecture the previous week. Workshop activities include discussion of multiple-choice questions and case studies,
as well as the completion of additional various activities. The workshops are designed to be interactive and

Pick one of the 2 topics:

Topic 1

Managers are often faced with the need to make ethical decisions, affecting their organisations and
both internal and external stakeholders. Assume you are a top manager at a large aerospace
manufacturer. Your well-known company manufactures and sells commercial passenger aircraft to
airlines all over the world. A senior engineer in the company has just alerted you to a technical issue in
your most popular narrow-body airliner utilised by hundreds of airlines across the world. The technical
issue relates to a software error with sensors that could adversely affect airplane safety or operation.
The senior engineer has recommended that you delay any announcement of this technical issue to the
aviation authorities, media and airlines until a thorough investigation is completed. This technical
investigation is expected to take a minimum of four weeks and will confirm if the plane’s safety or
operation is adversely impacted. In this unit, we have discussed the four ethical decision making rules.
Please discuss all four ethical decision making rules. Choose one of the four ethical decision making
rules to explain your decision on whether or not to agree to the request from the senior engineer.

OR
Topic 2
Pick one successful and one unsuccessful organisation you are familiar with. Compare and contrast
how top managers at these two organisations effectively and ineffectively utilised Fayol’s four
functions in their firms.
Hint: Please pick organisations that are well known. Please check your organisation with your tutor
if you are unsure. Your tutor needs to be aware of your chosen organisation as your tutor is
marking your paper. Please consult your tutor by week two (week beginning 5 August 2019).

Academic Integrity (including plagiarism and cheating)

Any conduct by a student that is dishonest or unfair in connection with any academic work is considered to be
academic misconduct. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offences that will be investigated and may result in
penalties such as reduced or zero grades, annulled units or even termination from the course. Assessments under
investigation will not be given a mark until the matter is concluded. This may result in the unit grade being
withheld or a grade of Fail Incomplete (F-IN) until a decision has been made by the Student Disciplinary Panel. This
may impact on enrolment in further units/study periods.
Plagiarism occurs when work or property of another person is presented as one's own, without appropriate
acknowledgement or referencing. Submitting work which has been produced by someone else (e.g. allowing or
contracting another person to do the work for which you claim authorship) is also plagiarism. Submitted work is
subjected to a plagiarism detection process, which may include the use of text matching systems or interviews with
students to determine authorship.
Cheating includes (but is not limited to) asking or paying someone to complete an assessment task for you or any
use of unauthorised materials or assistance during an examination or test.
From Semester 1, 2016, all incoming coursework students are required to complete Curtin’s Academic Integrity
Program (AIP). If a student does not pass the program by the end of their first study period of enrolment at
Curtin, their marks will be withheld until they pass. More information about the AIP can be found at:
https://academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au/students/AIP.cfm
Refer to the Academic Integrity tab in Blackboard or academicintegrity.curtin.edu.au for more information,
including student guidelines for avoiding plagiarism.

Student Equity
There are a number of factors that might disadvantage some students from participating in their studies or
assessments to the best of their ability, under standard conditions. These factors may include a disability or
medical condition (e.g. mental illness, chronic illness, physical or sensory disability, learning disability), significant
family responsibilities, pregnancy, religious practices, living in a remote location or another reason. If you believe
you may be unfairly disadvantaged on these or other grounds please contact Student Equity at eesj@curtin.edu.au
or go to http://eesj.curtin.edu.au/student_equity/index.cfm for more information.
You can also contact AccessAbility Services: http://bit.ly/accessability-curtin (disability/health related grounds) or
https://students.curtin.edu.au/personal-support/faith/ (religious/faith related) for further information.
It is important to note that the staff of the university may not be able to meet your needs if they are not informed
of your individual circumstances so please get in touch with the appropriate service if you require assistance. For
general wellbeing concerns or advice please contact Curtin's Student Wellbeing Advisory Service at:
