Parking Brake - Test

SMCS - 4267-081 

This procedure should be used to determine if the parking brake is functional. This procedure is intended 
to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The brake holding effort that is required to sustain a 
machine at a specific engine rpm varies depending on the machine. The variations are the differences in 
the engine setting, in the power train efficiency, and in the brake holding ability, etc.  

Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing the
parking brake.

If the machine begins to move during the test, reduce the engine speed
immediately and apply the service brakes. 

Test the parking brake on a dry, level surface.  

Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of 
obstacles.

Steering Frame Lock  

(1) Steering frame lock in the STORED position.  

1. Make sure that the steering frame lock is in the STORED position. 

2. Fasten the seat belt before you test the parking brake. 

3. Start the engine. Raise the bucket slightly.

Operator Controls  

(2) Upshift gear speed switch. (3) Transmission direction control switch. 

Note: The following step will produce a Warning Category 3. The parking brake indicator will

turn ON and the master action light will flash. The action alarm will sound.  

4. Engage the parking brake. Change upshift gear speed switch (2) to THIRD SPEED. Change 
transmission direction control switch (3) to the FORWARD position, while the AUTO shift 
switch is in the OFF position. 

5. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move. 

6. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Switch transmission direction control switch (3) to the 
NEUTRAL position. 

7. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine. 

8. Inspect the parking brake components for wear or damage if the machine moves during testing.
