THE PARTS OF SPEECH

There are eight main parts of speech (also known as word classes): nouns, pronouns,
adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. In this
workshop, we are going to work four parts: nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs

(Hay ocho partes principales en la oración (también conocidas como clases de palabras):
sustantivos, pronombres, adjetivos, verbos, adverbios, preposiciones, conjunciones e
interjecciones. En este taller vamos a trabajar cuatro partes: sustantivos, pronombres, adjetivos,
verbos.

1. NOUN
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea. Examples of nouns: Daniel, London,
table, dog, teacher, pen, city, happiness, hope.

Un sustantivo es el nombre de una persona, lugar, cosa o idea. Ejemplos de sustantivos:

Daniel, Londres, mesa, perro, maestro, bolígrafo, ciudad, felicidad, esperanza).

Example: Steve lives in Sydney. Mary uses pen and paper to write letters. (Ejemplos:
Steve vive en Sydney. Mary usa lápiz y papel para escribir cartas).

2. VERB - (Action Word)

A verb shows an action or state of being. A verb shows what someone or something is
doing. Examples: go, run, eat, play, live, walk, have, are, is.

Un verbo muestra una acción o estado. Un verbo muestra lo que alguien o algo está
haciendo. Ejemplos: ir, correr, comer, jugar, vivir, caminar, tener, como, son, es)

Example: I like English. I study Math and play their games.

Ejemplos: Me gusta el inglés. Estudio Matemáticas y juego sus juegos.

3. ADJECTIVE - (Describing word)

An adjective describes, modifies or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.
Examples: big, happy, green, young, fun, crazy, three.

Un adjetivo describe, modifica o da más información sobre un sustantivo o pronombre.

Ejemplos: grande, feliz, verde, joven, divertido, loco, tres.

Example: The little girl had a pink hat.

Ejemplo: la niña tenía un sombrero rosa.

4. PRONOUN - (Replaces a Noun)

A pronoun is used in place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition. Examples of
pronouns: I, you, we, they, he, she, it, me, us, them, him, her, this, those.

Se usa un pronombre en lugar de un sustantivo o frase nominal para evitar la repetición.

Ejemplos de pronombres: yo, tú, nosotros, ellos, él, ella, eso, yo, nosotros, ellos, él, ella,
esto, esos.

Example: Mary is tired. She wants to sleep. I want her to dance with me.
Ejemplo: Mary está cansada. Ella quiere dormir. Quiero que ella baile conmigo.
