1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This procedure covers the basic requirement of the piling work of PC Spun
piles and the method for driving vertical concrete pile either precast pre-
stressed or precast reinforced concrete

1.2 Applicable Code and Standard

The following codes and standard shall be used together with technical
specification :

ACI MCP 4-1980 Recommendations for Design, Manufacture &

Installation of Concrete Piles.

ASTM D 1143-87 Piles Under Static Axial Compressive Load.

AWS D1.1-86 Welding Practice and Qualifications of Fabricator and

Erectors of Welded Construction

2. PILING WORKS

2.1 General

Description of Pile, PC spun piles used for this project.

2.2 Material

2.2.1 The piles shall be either precast pre-stressed or precast reinforced

concrete piles of approved design.

2.2.2 The concrete shall conform to the grade C-70 using type II cement.

2.2.3 In case of precast concrete piles the prestressing cables shall conform
to AASHTO

2.2.4 The piles shall have a standard arrangement for splicing either at one
end or in case of sections other than end sections at both ends. When
such a splicing arrangement is made of structural steel the structural
steel & welding shall conform to the AWS D1.1 .

2.2.5 The piles shall be straight, free from any surface defects such as cracks,
fissures, exposed loose aggregate or any other unacceptable flaw. The
piles shall be inspected jointly by the Engineer and the pile driving
Contractor & a preliminary acceptance certificate shall be obtained by
the Contractor. This however shall not absolve the pile supplier of his
responsibility about the quality of pile. The final acceptance certificate
shall be obtained only after the pile section has been driven.

2.2.6 All pile sections shall be strong enough to withstand the pile driving
force & shall not loose their integrity upon driving under the normal
circumstances. The pile heads shall withstand the impact of hammer
without showing cracks, deformations and

disintegration upon driving under normal circumstances. If such an

incidence is noted, the Engineer shall carefully examine the driving
circumstances & shall give his decision about the quality of the pile
section. The pile section found unacceptable in quality shall not be paid.

2.3 Method for Handling PC Spun Pile Material

2.3.1 Pile Stocking

For the stock pile, in advance, make ground stable and evenly level and
then chock out with timber as below. Maximum stock shall be 3 storeys
height.

L/4 L/2 L/4

2.3.2 Pile Lifting

2.3.2.1 The pile section to be driven shall be lifted at the specified

point meant for such purpose. Any damage occurring to a pile
section during this shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

2.3.2.2 Lifting pile shall be at the triangular sign, space should not to
far away from the crane and area shall be free from other
surrounding disturbances

2.4 Piling Equipment

Piling equipment consist of but not limited to :

 Driving Rig

 Hammer JWDD 8.0 or Equivalent

 Cap and Wooden Cushion.

2.5 Survey Equipment

Normally the following survey equipment are used for piling work but not
limited to :

 Theodolite or Total Station.

 Auto Level

 Measuring Tape.

 Marking Stick / Paint / Color Pen.

2.6 Transportation Equipment

The following tools shall be prepared by contractors before and during piling
work but not limited to :

 Service Crane.

 Trailer Truck.

 Supporting Equipment : - Wheel loader ( if needed ).

- Excavator ( if needed ).

2.7 The bearing capacity f or pile shall be calculated by ENR formula :

1 WxH
Ra = FS x S  (0.5 xK )

where :

Ra = Allowable bearing capacity of pile (ton)

FS = Safety Factor
W = Hammer Weight (ton)
H = Ram Stroke (cm)
S = Final Set or penetration per blow (cm)
K = Final Rebound (cm)
2.8 Joint of Pile

2.8.1 When it is required to splice a pile section to achieve either the driven
length or to achieve a 'set', the splice shall be done as per the method
of splicing specified by the pile manufacturer and shall be inspected by
the Engineer. If such method of splicing involves welding, the welding
should be done as per the standards. Welding shall be done after
contractor submit their WPS, PQR and welder certificate as per AWS
D1.1 and shall be approved by Client / Owner representative.

2.9 Pile Driving

2.9.1 Just before driving, each pile shall be checked for straightness, cracks
and other defects.

2.9.2 The pile location shall be as per approved drawing & shall be set out by
contractor and checked by the Client Surveyor. The Contractor shall be
responsible for clearing the site of any temporary obstructions to move
the driving equipment to a suitable position from which the pile can be
driven.

2.9.3 Pre boring shall be done just before Piling with depth that is checked
and approved by the Engineer after confirmation by Civil Design.

2.9.4 In principle, pile driving shall be executed in the presence of

representatives.

2.9.5 It is preferable to drive piles from the center of site to it’s perimeter to
avoid refusal. Due to the compaction effect by the previously driven
piles.

2.9.6 Piles shall be moved from its storage area to the pilling machine with
special care to avoid damage to the pile.

2.9.7 Piles shall be hung properly to avoid causing damages to them.

2.9.8 The pile section to be driven shall be held true to the position in which
it has to be driven. The Engineer may check verticality, at his discretion
& shall instruct the contractor about the rectification if needed.

2.9.9 Piles shall be driven plumb or to the designed angle, and shall not be
excessively pulled into line after driving.

2.9.10 Proper cushion, preferably pine, shall be used to protect the pile head,
and to transmit the blow of hammer uniformly to the pile head. The
cushion shall be changed at proper intervals.

2.9.11 If the following matter happens, the Sub-contractor shall immediately

inform Engineer. All deviations shall be reported by the Engineer to Civil
Design and their opinion on the matter shall be sought, regarding the
rectification including driving an additional pile if necessary. In such
case the cost of the pile driven in wrong location, including the
material, shall be recovered from the Contractor.

2.9.12 Piles shall be driven to a specified 'set' (final set is less than 5 cm per 3
x 10 blows), total blows per 0.5 m’ not exceed 500, total blows for total
length not exceed 1800 or to a length as specified on the design
drawings provided by Client / Engineer. The pile should be driven up to
the pile driving elevation as specified on the drawings. All such levels
shall be checked and approved by the Engineer.

2.9.13 If a pile is cracked, broken, or otherwise damaged or driven out of

plumb or designed angel, extra pile(s) shall be driven as directed by the
Client representatives at the Sub-contractor’s own expense.

2.9.14 Welding of pile joint shall be inspected and rectified by Engineer before
epoxy and driving into appropriate depth or ‘set’.

2.9.15 After a pile group is driven the contractor shall clear all his equipment,
material, wood scantlings or any other debris from the pile group
location.

2.9.16 The contractor shall carry out a pile load test either static or dynamic 3
% from total pile driven.

3. MEASUREMENT AND RECORD

The following shall be measured and reported for every pile at the designed driving
length or near to it.

3.1 Rebound.

3.2 Final set.

3.3 Penetration with relevant information as follows but not limited to :

3.3.1 Identification number of pile (as shown in piling plan).

3.3.2 Type and length of pile.

3.3.3 Type of hammer.

3.3.4 Dropping height of hammer.

3.3.5 Length of pile as driven at measured from the average set of the last 3
x 10 blows.

The sub contractor shall submit the report required to the Enginer on every pile
driving day.
