The supplied CAD in Hypermesh v14 supplied file: DUCT_manifold_CAD_benchmark.hm14

The task is to provide a quotation to create a 2D Dyna meshed mid-surface model that reflects
the supplied CAD in accordance with the supplied meshing criteria on next slide.

All mesh should meet supplied meshing criteria and thickness assigned within their individual
component names. Example of part name: Duct_Closure_Pnl@2.50mm

These are plastic parts and as such can have varying thickness across the parts. This needs
to be captured in the mesh. Thickness changes of 0.1mm should be captured in the supplied
mesh. This will likely mean that that there are several components for each part. Thickness
changes should be captured in such a way as to allow separate property and component cards
to be generated. Assigning thickness variation to the element is not acceptable. Neither is it
acceptable to use Auto Thicknening, and create scattered random element thicknesses. Auto
thickness tools can create incorrect thickness scatter. It is recommended that these
thicknesses should be evaluated and rationalised against the 3D CAD in order to give a
reasonable graduation of thickening.

Element Meshing Criteria (Plastic parts only):

Ave Size: 4mm

Minimum: 2mm (min. normalized height – not shortest edge)
Element Size (max): 8mm
Max Warp: 12deg
Min Jacobian: 0.6
Max Quad Angle: 140
Min Quad Angle: 40
Max Tri Angle: 130
Min Tri Angle: 20
Max Aspect ratio: 4:1
Max no Trias: 5% total (Concentration of tri-elements are not acceptable
means of removing warped elements)

Washers around holes where geometry/mesh criteria allows.

Clip Towers

The clips should consist of three elements We use rigid elements to represent the clip
across the clip plus material thickness connections placed in the centre of the clip
graduated along its length to represent as circled - please maintain/replicate these
the differing thickness due to manufacture where applicable.
(tool draft angle).

Other Guidelines – Important for Accurate Analysis

All holes should have a washer with a width of 3mm, or as close to as is possible
depending on surrounding geometry. Many of the fixing holes will need to have rigid
patches components for connection to adjust assemblies (includes).

Screw Towers/Bosses

Head of screw should connect to both

rows of nodes on the washer element.

The number of nodes connecting the adjoining part

should reflect (approximately) the length of the screw.
If screw CAD is not available then a engineering
judgment is acceptable.

Tri-elements
In this example the number of tri elements
in mesh model exceeds the Requirement of
<5%: Approximately 20%

In this example : When combining these two tri

elements in to one quad the warpage was 0deg

Requirement - Max no Tria’s: 5% total

Concentration of tri-elements will also attract stress
and over stiffen the part. Splitting wrap elements of a
means of removing potentially warped elements may
increased the tri-element count as well.

An example of a meshed part that isn't acceptable representation of the 3D CAD.
