JOB TITLE: Rotational Midwife

BAND: Band 5

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Head of Midwifery

REPORTS TO: Head of Midwifery

JOB SUMMARY:
As a registered midwife, the post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning implementation and
evaluation of care provided in all areas of midwifery. Working autonomously within guidelines and the
sphere of professional practice

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Communication and Relationship Skills:


 Actively supports women and their families, through communicating difficult and complex information
using a variety of methods to ensure effective understanding.
 Responsible for supporting and counselling women who are pregnant, explaining choices they have in
midwifery care.
 Proactively support women who require specialist investigations to monitor the health of their baby,
including the provision of antenatal screening advice and counselling.
 Ensure effective communication is maintained between members of the multi-disciplinary team to
enable appropriate individuals to be aware of changes to women and families plan of care.
 Ensure information is conveyed to women in a timely and understanding manner using different
communication methods to clarify understanding.
 Contributes to the provision of 24 hours support and advice across the area by participating in the on
call rota

Knowledge, Training and Experience:


 Uses knowledge and expertise to assess, plan and implement midwifery led care.
 Uses expertise to make adjustments to treatment plans, following guidelines.
 Maintain knowledge base to manage obstetric emergencies within the home as the lead professional.
 Maintain up to date knowledge of midwifery, including in depth knowledge of ante-natal screening,
using information to ensure women receive up to date and evidence based care.
 Responsible for interpreting knowledge and applying understanding to ensure that practice is up to
date and in line with guidelines and policy.
 To be proficient in the delivery of maternity care across all maternity areas in both hospital and
community settings and to include antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal care
 To be proficient in adult and neonatal resuscitation, as the lead professional in both hospital and
community settings

Analytical and Judgement Skills:


 Monitors women’s and fetal health during pregnancy, labour, post partum through interpretation of
information from tests results and clinical findings.
 Considers a range of options and appraises each one, making decisions and changing care
treatments.
 Takes remedial action, if appropriate, based on knowledge and skill to adjust care packages, in the
absence of a medical staff

Planning and Organisational Skills:


 Plans care for women, managing workload that will in clued clinics and home visiting options
 Responsible for managing and prioritising own workload against the needs of women and the service
needs.
 Delivers care interventions and specialist advice in a variety of settings within the maternity to promote
flexibility and choice for women.
 Orders investigations/test and prescribes medicines within agreed guidelines and policies.

Physical skills:
 Undertakes a range of midwifery skills which include;
 Conducting births in both home and hospital setting
 Performing key obstetric skills venous sampling, perineal suturing

RESPONSIBILITY

Responsibility for patient /client care:


 Responsible for developing midwifery led programmes of care for women which include care planning.
This will include managing a caseload and public health education, until such a time when the woman
is discharged or transferred from midwifery care
 Refer women to the multidisciplinary team members for appropriate care as required.
 Provide public health advice and support to promote healthy lifestyles for mother and baby.

Responsibilities for policy and service development:


 Follows and contributes to the development of policies and procedures, to ensure and effective
delivery of care for the caseload.
 Responsible for applying new policy and guidance to the caseload.

Responsibility for financial and physical resources:


 Responsible for ensuring adequate supplies of equipment are maintained to ensure midwifery care
can be conducted in the community.
 Uses specialist equipment to assist in the monitoring and diagnosis of patients.
 Responsible for ensuring the safety of specialist equipment and medication, required to provide
midwifery care.

Responsibility for Human Resources:


 Responsible for teaching junior staff, specialist techniques and skills
 Participates in the supervision and mentorship of students

Responsibility for Information Resources


 Responsible for providing accurate and timely records on midwifery care and performance using paper
and IT based systems, in accordance with Trust policy

Responsibility for Research and Development


 Participates in audits, and research-based studies to evaluate the effectiveness of care interventions

Freedom to Act
 The post holder plans their workload, using guidance, policies and professional code of conduct in
accordance to the needs of the patient group
 The post holder is required to use their own judgement, to define day to day work priorities
 The post holder is the lead professional for pregnant women within their caseload, unless otherwise
agreed

Physical Effort
 The post holder will have direct patient contact, delivering direct care in a variety of settings in
accordance with the need of patients

Mental Effort
 Required to produce detailed reports to ensure which appropriate child protection procedures can be
instigated
 The pot holder will be part of a rota, responding to the needs of the service as required on rotation and
night duty

Emotional Effort
 The post holder is required to support patients, through a range of treatments and experiences, which
can be highly distressing and challenging

Working Conditions
 The post holder will work in a variety of settings to deliver care, predominantly as a lone worker, which
includes clinics, healthcare departments, according to the needs of patients

HEALTH AND SAFETY


In addition to the Trust’s overall responsibility for health and safety you have a personal responsibility for
your own health and safety. As such you are required to inform your line manager of any safety issues
that you identify, that could affect you or others in your workplace. You must co-operate with
management and colleagues at all times in achieving safer work processes and work places, particularly
where this can impact on others

As a trust employee you will be trained in the correct use of any equipment provided to improve safety and
health within the trust. You are required to use the equipment when necessary and as instructed which
will include checking the equipment is safe to use, prior to its use and must report any defects immediately
to your line manager

Infection Control
In addition to the Trust’s overall responsibilities under the Health Act Code of Practice for the Prevention
of HCAI 2006 for your safety, you have a personal responsibility to ensure that your work adheres to this
Code in the delivery of safe patient care within the organization
