 Lecture Objectives
1. Your first objective should be to get an understanding of the
methods of prestressing and of the qualitative behaviour
of prestressed beams.

2. Next you need to appreciate that in prestressed concrete, the

design requirements are more complex than with other
types of members.

3. In particular it is necessary to check stresses not just at the

final limit state loading condition but also at different stages
during construction.

4. Also you need to appreciate that in designing a prestressed

beam it is necessary not only to determine the necessary
number of prestressing strands but also the jacking force
that must be applied to these strands.
