SKILL: Planning and designing

TITLE: EXCRETION IN ANIMALS

PROBLEM/QUESTION: Do coffee have a diuretic effect on the body?

HYPOTHESIS: Coffee exerts a more diuretic effect comparing to water thus the intake of
coffee will lead to a larger volume of urine.

AIM: To plan and design an experiment to investigate the diuretic effect of coffee on the body.

APPARATUS/MATRIALS: Pair of identical twins (same build , diet and level of activity, same
gender, height, health status, body type ,weight), stop watch , 1000 ml measuring cylinders, urinal
cups, 9000 ml coffee , 9000ml of water , room condition/temperature of 20 degrees Celsius

METHOD: ( 7 marks)

1. Get pair of twins ensure they obtain all the characteristics mentioned above ; allow them
to sit in a cool (20 degrees Celsius) room inorder to resduce the possibility of sweating
2. Ensure the twins does not consume any food prior the experiment
3. To reduce the amount of errors label the twins as A and B since they are identical (same
height, weight,health stautus etc)
4. Get separate cups labelled C an W ; twinA will drink coffee and twin B will drink water
5. Group
6. Pour 200 mllitres of coffee in cup C and also 200 ml of water in cup W with water being
the control
7. Tell the twins to drink the liquids simultaneously ensure to start the stopwatch exactly at
the same time and stop as soon as they are finish .document this time as the first hour
8. Accurately repeat this step for the remaining hours until the eighth hour is achieved
9. When the urge to urinate has come each twin will be given a urinal cup to urinate in ;
the urinate will then be measured
10. Every two hours collect the urine from the urinal cup and record the volume ; at the 8th
hour record the final volume of urine as volume of urine with coffee and volume of urine
with water
11. Compare both volume of urine in volumetric flasks
12. Record the results obtain in a table for 2 more days for accuracy

VARIABLES: Maniputaling: the volume of water and coffee consumed

Responding: Volume of urine excreated

Controlled: Temperature of the room, the twin’s characteristics, the types

of liquid used ( water and coffee)

Based on the aim and hypothesis It is expecyed that twin A that drank the coffee will excrete a higer
volume of urine comparing to twin B this is due to the fact Caffeine increases blood flow to
your kidneys, which spurs them to release more water through urination.

1. Include a table that shows how the results will be collected. Be sure to include a timeline (e.g day
1, day 2, day 3, day 4, day 5, etc)
2. Explain clearly base on the aim and the hypothesis what results are expected. Will I expect a large
volume of urine to be collected? From who?

DATA ANALYSIS: (1 mark)

1. Why do you expect the results that you’ve stated above? What effect does ADH have on the
collecting ducts of the kidney? What is diuresis? What effect does caffeine have on ADH? What
effect does caffein have on sodium ion uptake in the kidneys? Link diuresis to the effect of
caffeine on ADH and sodium ion uptake
2. state based on how you’ve reasoned above whether there is acceptance or rejection of hypothesis

LIMITATION: (I mark)

1. Explain what conditions could not be controlled and therefore qualify as a limitation. (eg, health
and pre-existing conditions, metabolic activity
