Lesson aims:

1. Topics: by the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to rephrase sentences so that they have the same meaning.
2. Writing skills: rephrasing, matching the meaning, practicing with key grammar – i.e. present perfect/ past
tense, ‘negative’/’positive’ expressions, passive/active forms.

Materials:
“Insight into PET with answers”; CD.

Preparation: before the class starts, the teacher opens the windows, makes light in the classroom, arranges
all the pupils’ chairs/ desks in semi-circle, makes sure the CD player works and all the tracks are in order,
writes all the pupils’ names on the board and places all the necessary materials on the desk.

Target language:

 Key language: different words, same meaning.


 Revised language: parallel expressions, transformation dialogue.

ACTIVITY 1 (SB 36, Writing, Activity 1) Discuss.

Aim: Ask and answer.


Procedure:
1. The T informs Ss that they will be practicing rephrasing, matching the meaning, and some key grammar –
i.e. present perfect/ past tense, ‘negative’/’positive’ expressions, passive/active forms, and then she asks them
to open their books: “Open your Student’s Book at page 36, please”.
2. The teacher explains to the pupils that they are to work in pairs in order to make complete sentences, to
which they are to afterwards answer in turns.
3. Ss are to discuss their answers first in groups, then as a class, in order to compare them to those of their
colleagues; a debate is to be started.
Interaction: Asking pupils at random for the answer in order to keep them focused and be ready to actively
participate in this activity.
Timing: 5 minutes

ACTIVITY 2 (SB 36, Writing, Activity 2) Read and rephrase.

Aim: Rephrasing.
Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 36, please”.
2. The T explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the sentences, setting a limit of 2 minutes for
doing it, and then she checks understanding with the class (unknown words, expressions, etc.).
3. The teacher asks Ss to rephrase the sentences so that they have the same meaning, using the words given.
4. Ss are to discuss their answers first in groups, then as a class, in order to compare them to those of their
colleagues and correct them, if needed.
Interaction: The teacher checks understanding of meaning and tenses with the class.
Timing: 10 minutes

ACTIVITY 3 (SB 36, Writing, Activity 3) Match the meaning

Aim: Reading for gist and main points.


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 36, please”.

2. The T explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the text, setting a limit of 3 minutes for doing it,
and then she checks understanding with the class (unknown words, expressions, etc.).
3. The T explains to the Ss that, as they are to complete similar sentences using different words that have the
same meaning, they have to find a connection between the words in the two given rows, and explain their
meaning while at it.
4. The Ss are to use a phrase from A or B to rephrase the sentences so that they have the same meaning.
5. Ss are to discuss their answers first in groups, then as a class, in order to compare them to those of their
colleagues and correct them, if needed.
Interaction: The teacher checks understanding of meaning and tenses with the class.
Timing: 10 minutes

ACTIVITY 4 (SB 37, Writing, Activity 4) Read and discuss

Aim: Practicing key grammar.


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their books by saying: “Open your Student’s Book at page 37, please”.
2. The T explains to Ss that they are to quickly read through the sentences, setting a limit of 4 minutes for
doing it, and then she checks understanding with the class (unknown words, expressions, etc.).
3. The teacher asks Ss to work individually, in order to practice rewriting sentences which include present
perfect/ past tense, ‘negative’/’positive’ expressions, or passive/active forms, and then think about as many
family holiday ideas as possible, which they are to afterwards compare to those of a partner.
4. The Ss take turns in providing the answers, checking them with the class, and correcting them if necessary;
a debate is to be started.
Interaction: Asking pupils at random for the answer in order to keep them focused and be ready to actively
participate in this activity.
Timing: 15 minutes

ACTIVITY 5 – Ending the lesson

Aim: Further practicing words and vocabulary


Procedure:
1. The teacher asks Ss to open their vocabulary lists and further practice the first half of the ‘M words’
section, insisting upon their meaning and spelling.
2. The T asks Ss to write and translate the ‘F words’ section on their notebooks, five times in a row.
(Homework)
3. The T informs Ss that next time they will be enhancing their listening skills concerning short messages and
parallel meanings, as they will have an authentic past PET paper from Cambridge ESOL – Listening.
Interaction: Asking pupils at random for the answer in order to keep them focused and be ready to actively
participate in this activity.
Timing: 10 minutes
