For 2010, Sampson was the honored recipient of the Carolinas PGA President’s Plaqu
e, which is awarded to the PGA Professional who has become a leader in player de
velopment and growth of the game of golf.
Growing the game of golf in private clubs is challenging. Typically, growth prog
rams are found at public facilities and include clinics for children and young a
dults just taking up the game. At South Carolina golf community Spring Island, S
ampson focuses on prolonging each member’s golf career through fitness and clinics
.
Sampson said, “I am honored to receive the President’s Plaque, however it’s not about
me. It’s about what we (the Club) have achieved through fitness, teaching and tour
nament programs. Our success is directly related to participation in our golf pr
ograms. It’s more about what the Club and its members are willing to do, and this
award is a testament to the fact that Spring Island is dedicated to growing the
game of golf.” For more information about golf at this South Carolina golf communi

In addition to the President’s Plaque, Sampson was also named Golf Professional of
the Year by his peers on Hilton Head Island and he was named Certified Instruct
or of the Week by the Titleist Performance Institute. A Level 2 Certified Golf I
nstructor, Sampson practices what he preaches, creating a golf fitness class for
members in which he himself has lost 40 pounds.
Community involvement is something that Sampson feels is an important part of be
ing a PGA Professional. Sampson is currently involved with 14 different local ch
arities or civic groups including serving as the President of the Hilton Head Is
land Chapter of the Carolinas PGA and founding a scholarship fund for assistant
golf professionals in Beaufort County. It is also worth noting that Old Tabby Li
nks held a Patriots Golf Day event in October to raise funds for the Wounded War
riors Project during which Sampson played 114 holes of golf and raised over $10,
000 for the foundation.
Spring Island is a 3,000-acre South Carolina golf community 25 minutes from Hilt
on Head and Beaufort, and 30 minutes by boat from Port Royal Sound and the open
Atlantic Ocean. Spring Island is limited to no more than 410 families on the 3,0
00 acres with 1,200 acres protected as nature preserve. Spring Island offers the
