Chapter 1 : Introduction to Networks

1
Introduction to network
• To build a Network

Computer Network Card Cables

• Benefits of network
 File sharing.
 Printer sharing.
 Internet connection sharing.

2
Introduction to network
Two common types of networks:
 Local Area Network (LAN).
 Wide Area Network (WAN).

Local Area Network Wide Area Network

 small area.  Connect networks in larger
 School, or building. geographic areas.

3
Introduction to network
Network architecture

The two major types of network operating systems are:

 Peer-to-Peer
 Client/Server

Peer-to-peer
 All computers are considered equal.
 Same OS.
Advantages:
 Less expense.
 Setup.

Disadvantages:
 Decentralized.
 Does not provide the security.

4
Introduction to network

Client - Server
 Centralize
 provide security.
 Windows Servers OS.

Advantages:
 Centralized.

Disadvantages :
 Expense.
 Dependence - When server goes
down, operations will cease
across the network.

5
Introduction to network
Physical network topologies

The physical topology of a network refers to the configuration of cables, computers.

Linear Bus

6
Introduction to network
Linear Bus

Advantages
 Easy to connect a computer .
 Requires less cable length.

Disadvantages
 Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable.
 Terminators are required.
 Difficult to identify the problem.

7
Introduction to network
Star
Advantages
 Easy to install and wire.
 No disruptions to the network when
connecting or removing devices.

Disadvantages
 Requires more cable length.
 If the hub, switch, or concentrator fails,
nodes attached are disabled.

8
Introduction to network
Ring
Advantages
 Token helps to reduces chances of
collision.
 all the traffic flows in only one direction
at very high speed.

Disadvantages
 Each packet of data must pass through all
the computers.
 If one workstation or port goes down, the
entire network gets affected.
 MAU’s and network cards are expensive as
compared to Ethernet cards and hubs.
