eCopy Desktop™ 9.2

(c) 1992 - 2008, eCopy, Inc. All rights reserved.

This Readme contains eCopy Desktop™ 9.2 product information and suggestions for
troubleshooting issues on Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Vista x86 Enterprise and
Vista x86 Business.

Installation/Upgrade/Uninstall

1. On Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista x86 Enterprise and Business eCopy
Desktop must be installed by a local administrator.

2. eCopy does not recommend installing eCopy Desktop™ and eCopy™ ShareScan® on the
same system.

OCR/Create Searchable Text/Search Pane

1. eCopy Desktop 9.2 uses Readiris Pro 11.1 (limited edition) as its OCR package. It is included
in the eCopy Desktop installation. There is no separate install or uninstall.

2. If the user has upgraded to Readiris Pro 11.1 (full version) in an earlier version of eCopy
Desktop, the user has to reinstall it after upgrading eCopy Desktop.

3. Using OCR to create a CSV file in Microsoft Word may result in inconsistent output. eCopy
recommends RTF output for better results.

4. When sending a document with light-colored text to OCR, eCopy recommends that the user
does not select “Convert to Black & White” before submitting the document because this may
result in some words not being recognized as text.

5. If you use the OCR to Clipboard command on a document that is less than 300 dpi, the
resulting text will be garbled. It is recommended that you rescan the document at 300 dpi or
greater.

Document Management Systems

1. To run as a regular user and use Lotus Domino Document Manager, the registry key ODMA32
must be created under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAILROOM by a local administrator.

2. When using Open Text’s Livelink, a file extension must be specified for a document when
saving it.

Lotus Notes

1. After opening a file attachment from Lotus Notes, making changes, and clicking the Save
button, the changes are saved to the temporary file that Lotus Notes automatically creates, and
not to the attachment itself.

2. eCopy users who experience problems with their Lotus indexing service should contact Lotus
support. There are many conditions spanning many release versions of Domino, Lotus Notes,
and Domino Document Manager which may be involved in diagnosing the problem. For the safety
of the user's previously saved data and entire database environment, any recommended
procedures should come directly from Lotus.

3. When creating a Lotus Notes e-mail message that will be completed at a later time, click the
Save as Draft button in the Lotus Notes client before closing eCopy Desktop to preserve the
attachment.

Printing

1. If a printing error page is printed from the Color imageRUNNER C3200 equipped with an EFI
controller when using a PostScript (PS) print driver, it is recommended that you switch to a PCL
print driver.

2. When printing to PS devices, remember to set the Auto-Select Paper feature to OFF, and use
the Advanced Properties features of the device driver to set the output paper and the scaling
factor -- scaling will override any fit-to-paper settings.

3. When printing an A4 size document with the eCopy Desktop 9 Printer from Microsoft Word, the
result is letter size. The workaround is to go into advanced printer settings and select A4 as the
paper size.

4. If you notice that there are problems printing with the eCopy Desktop 9 Printer, a repair of the
printer will need to be done. To do this you must be a local administrator on the machine.
Navigate to the install directory for eCopy (C:\Program Files\eCopy\Desktop 9.2\DesktopPrinter)
and run the Repair_eDesktop_Printer.bat file by double-clicking on the file. The printer will go
through a repair and should now function correctly.

5. When printing from certain third-party applications, such as Microsoft Word, into eCopy
Desktop via the eCopy Desktop 9 Printer, the Number of Copies and Collation print settings have
no effect.

6. A color document printed in black-and-white to a Canon iR8500 using a PCL driver may look
washed out. Using the Canon iR8500 PS v2.0 or higher driver will address this issue.

7. When using Color & 600 DPI for eCopy Desktop 9 Printer with larger paper sizes, a virtual
memory warning message may occur in conjunction with poor performance. eCopy recommends
using 300 DPI for these situations.

8. When printing a single-page document from eCopy Desktop with multiple copies and two-sided
printing selected, the pages may not print double-sided in some applications. To correct this,
select the Collate option.

9. Some PageMaker-generated PDF documents may print slowly when printed to an external
color printer using a PCL driver or when printed to the eCopy Desktop Printer in color. To work
around this issue, use a PostScript driver or print in black and white.

Other Things Users Should Know

1. Scanning color documents of 20 pages or more will result in a file that exceeds 4 MB. Many e-
mail servers do not accept attachments greater than 2-3 MB. The recommended limit for mailing
color documents is 20 pages.

2. When using the DR-2080C scanner series, a specific paper size should be selected when
performing "two-sided scan" in eCopy Desktop.

3. The Private Documents Directory is intended for personal use and should not be shared
because there is no file locking functionality.

4. eCopy recommends using non-dithered and high contrast colors for text annotations to ensure
best display and printout quality.
5. By default, Windows XP hides the keyboard navigation indicators. To turn these on, go to
Display properties, click Effects on the Appearance tab, and de-select "Hide underlined letters for
keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key".

6. File Association is set per user and is not global.

7. Running eCopy Desktop on a virtual PC is not supported.

8. When saving, exporting, or mailing CPY 8 documents with annotations, the annotations will be
made permanent in the document. The exceptions are Hyperlinks, Attachments or Sticky Notes;
these annotations are not supported in earlier versions of eCopy Desktop, so they will be omitted.
Also, previously created searchable text objects will be lost.

9. When using the Read layout in Microsoft Word, the eCopy Desktop Printer Add-in toolbar will
be removed. If you would like the toolbar to display, go to View > Toolbars and select the eCopy
Desktop Printer Add-in from the menu. In some instances the user may have to go to
Help>Disabled Items and enable the toolbars.

10. If eCopy Desktop is selected as the default viewer for TIFF documents and then uninstalled,
the TIFF file type will be removed from the computer system. To correct this you must manually
add the TIFF file type again and associate it with a TIFF viewer.

11. Some PDF documents containing small font sizes scanned into eCopy Desktop at 150 DPI or
less may result in text that is blurred and black text that appears to be purple. If this occurs,
eCopy recommends scanning the document in at 300 DPI.

12. If the same document is repeatedly compressed using XPert compression, then quality will
eventually suffer. If enabled, then XPert compression will be applied in the following situations:
when scanning, when printing a document through eCopy Desktop 9.0 printer, or when loading
certain file types, such as uncompressed TIFF files.
