Warnings:
• Read the respirator User Instructions including all
warnings, that if not followed, could result in serious
injury, sickness or death.
• Respirators help reduce, but do not eliminate exposure to
certain airborne contaminants.
• If your workplace is covered under OSHA, you must
have a written respirator program in place in accordance
with 29 CFR 1910.134.
• Do not connect or use the drinking tube in contaminated
atmospheres.
• 3M™ Head Harness FR-M40-101 contains natural
rubber latex.

CBRN Warfare Agents
Chemical agents can be solids, liquids, gases or vapors
Can also be hazardous through skin exposure
Industrial chemicals may be used as a weapon
Biological agents are particles
No known exposure limits and may not know you’ve
been exposed until afterwards
Radiological agents are radioactive particles
May be dispersed through a “dirty bomb”
Respirators won’t protect from a Nuclear blast
May help filter dust from the aftermath

OSHA Standard for Hazardous Waste Operations
and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER)
• Level A-D personal protective equipment (PPE) based upon
required level of skin and respiratory protection
• Level C personal protective equipment (air purifying
respirators) may be used only if all of the following are met:
– Oxygen concentration is at least 19.5%
– Contaminant is identified and concentrations are not immediately
dangerous to life or health (IDLH)
– Contaminant concentrations are within the maximum use
concentration for the respirator
– Potential skin exposure does not require a totally encapsulating
chemical protective suit
– There is an appropriate cartridge/filter available for the
contaminants
– If the contaminant is a gas or vapor, a cartridge or canister change
schedule has been developed

General Description
• Facepiece attaches to the head by a series
of six straps that are pulled tight to seal
the facepiece around the face and help
minimize air leakage
• During inhalation, air is drawn in through
the canister
• During exhalation, the exhalation valve
opens to let air out of the facepiece
• Second skin and eyepiece outserts help
resist chemical warfare agent permeation
through the facepiece
• Respirators help reduce, but do not
eliminate exposure to certain airborne
contaminants

Full Facepiece Assembly FR-M40B-10, 20, 30
Note: All of the following components plus the
Canister FR-15-CBRN must be in place to
have a NIOSH CBRN approved system.
Facepiece FR-M40-10, 20, 30 (S, M, L)

Second Skin, Small FR-M40-5

Second Skin, Medium/Large FR-M40-6

Assembly
• Second skin
– Remove canister and
exhalation valve cover
– Feed external drinking tube
through bottom hole of
second skin
– Carefully stretch second skin
over facepiece
• Eyepiece outserts
– Roll up rubber ring around
edge of outsert
– Place outsert over lens
– Unroll rubber ring around
sides of lens

Canister FR-15-CBRN
• NIOSH Testing
– P100 particulate filtration (99.97%)
– “Cap 1” means test life > 15 minutes against high
concentrations of ammonia, cyanogen chloride,
cyclohexane (organic vapors), formaldehyde, hydrogen
cyanide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, phosgene,
phosphine, and sulfur dioxide
– Test life > 5 minutes at high flow (100 L/min)
Actual service life may be longer at lower concentrations
• Canister approval means it can be used to escape from IDLH
environments if there is adequate oxygen present
• 5 year shelf life with cap and plug in place
– Expiration date printed on foil wrapper and bottom of
canister
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division © 3M 2004
Time Use Limitations
• Warfare Agents – replace entire respirator within 8 hours, or
within 2 hours of exposure to liquid agents based on NIOSH
testing with sarin (GB) and distilled mustard (HD)
• Particles – replace canister if increased breathing resistance
detected. If exposed to oily aerosols, change within 40 hours of
use or 30 days, whichever comes first
• Chemicals – develop canister change schedule based on
contaminant and concentration levels
– Maximum use concentration (MUC) is 50 x exposure limit*,
or levels that are immediately dangerous to life or health
(IDLH), whichever is lower
– Service life at MUC for warfare agents ≈ 30 to >100 hours
– Service life at MUC for industrial agents ≈ 1 to >50 hours

* Assumes wearer has been quantitatively fit tested

Inspection
• OSHA requires monthly, pre and post use
• Eyepiece outserts and 2nd skin attached
• Canister unopened and not expired
• Replace damaged parts or respirator
– Lenses
– Exhalation valve
– Inhalation valve/gasket
– Headstraps
– Voicemitters/gasket
– Drinking tube
– Face seal
– Nosecup/valves
– Plastic and metal parts

Canister Assembly
• Canister may be mounted on
either left or right side
– Use FR-M40-108 D-Ring to
switch side voicemitter, side
voicemitter gasket and
inhalation valve kit

• Remove canister cap and plug

• Screw canister into side port
• Tighten 1/4 turn past first contact
with inhalation valve kit

Donning
• Choose appropriate size facepiece
– No hair between face and
sealing surface
• Loosen straps and invert over
front of facepiece
• Place facepiece against chin first,
and then rest of face
• Pull head harness over head
• Tighten bottom straps equally,
then temple and head straps
• Ensure pad is centered on back of
head and straps lay flat against
head
• Recheck all straps to ensure they
are tight and evenly tensioned on
both sides
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division © 3M 2004
User Seal Check
• Negative Pressure (Recommended)
– Cover canister inlet port
– Inhale gently
– Facepiece should collapse
• Positive Pressure
– Push on exhalation valve cover
with heel of hand
– Exhale gently
– Facepiece should bulge
• If face seal leaks are detected, readjust
facepiece and/or strap tension
• Do not enter contaminated area unless
user seal check has been passed
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division © 3M 2004
Fit Testing
• OSHA requires annually
• Pass user seal check
• Qualitative fit testing
– Saccharin, Bitrex™, irritant
smoke, banana oil
– Allows respirator to be used
up to 10 x exposure limit
• Quantitative fit testing
– Portacount®, controlled
negative pressure
– Allows respirator to be used
up to 50 x exposure limit

Doffing
• Decontaminate according to
contaminant prior to removal

• Loosen bottom straps

• If used by more than one
person, also loosen temple and
top straps
• Pull straps over head
• Dispose of used canister (and
facepiece if necessary) in
accordance with all applicable
waste regulations
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division © 3M 2004
Cleaning
• Remove canister, eyepiece
outserts and second skin
• Wash with mild soapy water and
rinse thoroughly
– Cleaning with solvents may
damage facepiece
– If decontaminating solution
DS2 is used, rinse
voicemitters thoroughly
• If facepiece is used by more than
one person, disinfect using dilute
bleach solution (1 oz per 2 gallons
water) and rinse thoroughly
• Air dry
3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division © 3M 2004
Storage
• Store in plastic bag included with
facepiece or equivalent
• Canister unopened in original foil
pouch
• Cool clean environment where it
will not be physically damaged (i.e.
0 to 120F (-18 to 49C))
– NIOSH conditions samples for 3
weeks at 95 to 160F (35 to 71C)
and for 3 days at -95F (-32C)
before performance testing, but
this is not recommended for
routine storage
