OZTAG RULES

To start the game each team must have at most, 8 players on the field with the team that has
possession of the ball standing half way between each try line and the defending team must be
standing 7 metres back from them. The ball must only be passed backwards or knocked backwards
otherwise it is a hand over where the other team then gains possession of the ball. The first play is
started by tapping the ball against your foot. A play is stopped when a defender rips either one or
both of the tags from the attacker and then placing the tag on the ground to mark where the play
should resume. The defender who successfully tagged the other attacker then must mark the
defender which they tagged by standing in front of them until the play has commenced. When a
player has been tagged they must roll the ball under their legs to another player who is labelled the
dummy half. The dummy half then continues the play. The defending team cannot proceed past the 7
metres until the dummy half has touched the ball. If the dummy half gets tagged then possession
changes over to the other team. After the defenders have tagged the attackers 6 times then possession
changes over. The defenders can only tag the person who is carrying the ball. The attacker cannot
protect their tags by any means including; blocking or turning.

To score, the attacking team must place the ball down after the try line and before the end of the field
to score a point. In the case of mixed gender games a female would receive 2 points for every try
made and a male would receive 1 point. In a mixed game there can be no more than 4 men on the
field at one time or 5 women. Teams can be made up of either 4 men and 4 women or 5 women and 3
men. The ball can only be kicked in two situations; before the first play or after the fourth tag. If a
ball has been dropped or knocked on by the opposing team the now attacking team can kick the ball
before picking it up. The ball can only be kicked below the shoulder height of the referee and if the
referee is struck at any time with the ball than it is a change over from the position where he or she
got struck. Oztag is a non-contact sport and forceful contact can be punishable. Other forms of
misconduct include:
 Disputing the referee’s decision
 Tripping, striking or kicking another player
 The use of offensive language
 Obstructing another player who does not possess the ball
 Repeated rule breaking
 A professional foul
These are all punishable by the means of a caution, the sinbin or the dismissal of the player. A player
can be placed in the sinbin for up to 10 minutes at the referee’s discretion and while they are there,
another player cannot enter the field to replace them. Once their time in the sinbin is over they are
allowed to renter the game. If a player is dismissed from a game they are not allowed to play for the
rest of the game and are suspended for the next 2 matches, depending on the severity this could be
extended.
