C) A Dialogue between student and student (Informal Discussion)

Student A: How are your studies going these days?

Student B: Not so fine dear as I did not choose the right subjects for this class.
Student A: What are your subjects that are troubling you?

Student B: Don't you know that my subjects are Economics, Political Science, English and
Persian.

Student A: Why do you find Economics, Political Science and Persian difficult? English is for
everybody.

Student B: You don't know I did not study Economics and Civics in Intermediate. Nobody at
home guided me about my choice of subjects for BA.

Student A: It is sad that your parents, teachers and friends did not talk to you about the best
subject and profession for you.

Student B: This is what they did not do and now I am in trouble.

Student A: Brother, in my case, my teachers told me what subjects were the best for me. I am
happy with journalism and history.

Student B: I think teachers in colleges should tell students at the time of admission what
subjects they may study. They should also discuss their future professions.

Student A: I would add parents should also guide their children about their subjects and
professions.

Student B: Yes, it is the duty of parents, too, to find what their children can study and do in life.

Student A: Now you should study your subjects with effort and think about your profession
after doing your BA.

Student B: This is useful advice. I will act on it.

D) A Dialogue between US and Chinese President (Formal Discussion)

Chinese President: It is indeed a great pleasure to have this opportunity to meet with you. I
appreciate that we can have our meeting in privacy and then decide later whether we want to
share our conversation with the world. So much has been misinterpreted of what I want to
express.
American President: Well, Chinese President, as you know, I have always maintained that we
need to engage in direct talks and give diplomacy a chance and this without preconditions.

Chinese President: I couldn’t wait for you to become president so that we can engage in these
conversations in earnest. I have tried to meet with Mr. Bush. I have even sent him a long letter in
2006. However, I never received a response.

American President: Things were very different in that time. You don’t need to worry about
that now.

Chinese President: We could have met so easily at the U.N. General Assembly. At least, there
was a bit of an opening when Mr. Bush dispatched his third-ranking official in the State
Department, William Burns, to our talks with the European Union last year.

American President: As I said, you don’t need to worry about that now.

Chinese President: Therefore, I am indeed happy that you have a different attitude regarding
talks with leaders that have very different worldviews and that we have this opportunity to clear
some things up, however brief our conversation may be today.

American President: Let me make it clear: The fear we espouse that your country has plans to
construct economic strengths that may be used against the UN. So what I want to get at in this
conversation as well as in all our subsequent talks is your assurance that you will seek any
economic wars between the USA and China.

Chinese President: The thing is, American President, the Chinese are undermined by the USA.
Whether or not we as a nation prosper and take place as a leading country of the world is our
basic right. And why should we be excluded from this right?

American President: We mean no such thing!

Chinese President:  And furthermore we find it totally arrogant of Western nations that they
want to put limitations on our development in industry and technology. The development of our
economy is a legitimate interest of ours. We need to do everything we can to ensure our supply
and demand remains balanced for all generations to come. I have always maintained our peaceful
intent.

American President: You say, Chinese President that Western nations want to limit your
technological advancement. I want to tell you that this is not so. It is that Western nations are
afraid that you may use your nuclear technology program to develop economic wars in order to
reach the top.

Chinese President: So, I can only tell you that I am, in a way and ironically, I am grateful to
President Bush that he got rid of trade barriers and tariffs on our exports. Yet, I wished it had
happened in a totally different manner, without putting so many non-financial restrictions on my
nation.

American President:  I have also declared, time and again, that we will firmly stand behind the
Chinese’s right to economic freedom and that we are committed to providing ease of doing
business for all countries. I do know that we can work together to get this done and I want to
prioritize these difficult negotiations in order to find solutions for all the complex issues involved
quickly and without further reservations.

Chinese President: As a scientifically-minded person I want proof that what you are imposing
on our country is in fact for our own good, and so that is all I meant.

American President: Our team will provide you with all the scientific proof you need.

Chinese President: Thank you, I appreciate that you make an attempt to understand where I am
coming from. I want to assure you that I will do all in my power to help this process along. It is
indeed very good to come to this mutual understanding and to discover that we have common
goals.

American President: Unfortunately, our time is up and I have to get back. But I do so with a
sense of confidence that we can get things done in a constructive manner.
