1. Introduction
Correct tightening of the hydraulic nuts at the tie rods are essential in order to avoid unintended
loosening of the nuts during operation and hereby the risk of engine break down.

2. Reference
Actual data for the tightening of the hydraulic tightened tie rods are to be drawn from the drawings
values for bolt tightening covering the engine type in question.

3. Preparation
Before installation the thread must be cleaned carefully and it must be checked that the thread
are free of dent marks and damaged. The threads are to be applied with lubrication or loctite ac-
cording to the specification given in the documentation, in this connection it must be noted that
the application of lubrication/loctite might not be the same in both ends of the tie rod, the following
abbreviation is used.

M = lubrication paste up to 200°C e.g. Molycote paste D or Optimoly paste white-T.

MH = lubrication paste above 200°C e.g. Molycote paste HSC or Copa slip.
O = lubricating oil.
XX = Loctite 243.

4. Installation of tie rods

When installing the tie rods in the engine these are to be set by a specified tightening torque
informed in Newton meter (Nm) or just tightened by hand, following some examples from the
documentation.
Hand – M = hand tightening and lubricated with Molycote paste D or Optimoly paste white-T.
180 – M = tightening with 180 Nm and lubricated with Molycote paste D or Optimoly paste white-T.

5. Hydraulic tightening procedure

The tightening procedure for tie rods are to be carried out in two steps, and the elongation of the
tie rod are to be measured during the tightening sequence. In case the measured elongation is
found outside the specification, then repeat the tightening procedure.

When the measured value is still out of tolerance, check the dial gauge and the hydraulic tool and
repeat the tightening procedure.

If the measured value still is out of tolerance, the materiel specification of the tie rod has to be
verified.

In general tie rods are to be tied up in pair, e.g. at main bearing caps both tie rods are to be tight-
ened at the same time also it must be noted that some components has a specified sequence for
the tightening, therefore it is important to consult the actual documentation for details prior to the
tightening up of any components.

Example of mounting and tightening procedure for main bearing caps,

1. Mount of main bearing cap.
ƒƒ Main tie rod screwed into the bottom of the cap nut.
ƒƒ Main tie rod moved through the bores of the cylinder crankcase.
ƒƒ Main bearing cap moved on to the main tie rod.
ƒƒ Screw nut manually on to the main tie rod.

2. Mounting of the cross tie rod.

ƒƒ Cross tie rod screwed into the bottom of the main bearing cap.
ƒƒ Screw nut manually on to the cross tie rod.

3. Pre-tightening of the cross tie rod.

ƒƒ Pre-tightening of the cross tie rod by Pv (200 bar) with the hydraulic tool.
ƒƒ Tightening nut by use of the adjusting rod.
ƒƒ Release pressure on hydraulic tool (P = 0 bar).

4. Finish tightening of the main tie rods.

ƒƒ Pre-tightening of the main tie rod by Pv (250 bar) with the hydraulic tool.
ƒƒ Tightening nut by use of the adjusting rod.
ƒƒ Release pressure on hydraulic tool (P = 0 bar).
ƒƒ Mount measuring device on hydraulic tool. For a correct measuring the tool has to
be mounted with the magnetic bracket on the adjusting cylinder of the hydraulic tool.
ƒƒ Dial gauge set to 0.
ƒƒ Finish tightening of the main tie rod by Ps (1200 bar).
ƒƒ Tightening nut by use of the adjusting rod.
ƒƒ Release pressure on hydraulic tool (P = 0 bar).
ƒƒ Read the elongation Δl on the dial gauge and compare with the value in the table.

5. Finish tightening of the cross tie rods.

ƒƒ Mount measuring device on hydraulic tool. For a correct measuring the tool has to
be mounted with the magnetic bracket on the adjusting cylinder of the hydraulic tool.
ƒƒ Dial gauge set to 0.
ƒƒ Finish tightening of the cross tie rod by Ps (1200 bar).
ƒƒ Tightening nut by use of the adjusting rod.
ƒƒ Release pressure on hydraulic tool (P = 0 bar).
ƒƒ Read the elongation Δl on the dial gauge and compare with the value in the table, note
the elongation value in the assembly documentation.

6. Pressure limits
In order to avoid too high pressure will be applied during the tightening procedure the pressure limi-
tation at the hydraulic pump are to be set at 50 bar above the tightening value for the actual tie rod.

When un-tightening the maximum allowable pressure is 5% above the tightening pressure.
