Amelia was born in her grandparents' house in Kansas. 1Jer parenls didn't have any

decided lo study nursing and worked in a hospital in World War 1. Whcn shc was 23, shc
visited an airshow and wenl up in a plane. Al that momenl, she knew that she wanted
lo be a pilot.
What she did

Amelía had Oying lcssons, and a year later, she broke her first record - she flew up to
14,000feet. She marned at 34, but never had children. The nexl year she became the
first "aman (and íhe second person) lo fly alone across the Atlantic, She was now
famous, and she travelled around Ihe world lo talk abaut her cxperiences, And in 1935,
..hen she was 38, she became the firsl person lo fly alone across the Pacific,
Her last flight

She began Ihe 29,000 milc night in Miami on 1 [une 1937. On 2 July she was nearly al

His early years
Yuriwas bom on J Iaern and his family was very poor, As a teenager in World \Var Il, he
MW his fírst plane - a Russian fighter jet. Al lbal moment, he knew that he wanled to
be a pilot, He studied hard so that he could join a flying club. Ilis teachcrs thought he
was a natural pilot and told him lo ioin the Russian Air Force.
What he did
He became an excellent pilot, And he was now a husband and father. But when the first
Russian satelhte went into space, he wanled lo becorne an astronaut. After two years of
secret Iraimng, Ihe doctors chose Yuri because he was the best in all íhe lests. On 12
