Natural Numbers: Counting Numbers are called Natural Numbers and consist of all the numbers
from 1 onwards. Natural numbers are endless and denoted with 'N'.

N={1,2,3,4........so on}

To express numbers in words there are two commonly used methods

1) The Indian Number System.
2) The International Number System
INDIAN NUMBER SYSTEM:
Indian Place Value chart:

CRORES LAKHS THOUSANDS ONES

Ten crores Crores

Ten Lakhs Ten Thousands HUNDREDS TENS ONES
lakhs thousands
100000000 10000000 1000000 100000 10000 1000 100 10 1

In Indian System of numeration a number is split into periods. Starting from right they are called
ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, lakhs and crores.

➢ Further Ones place is divided into ones ,tens and hundreds. Thousands place is divided into
thousands , ten thousands . Same way Lakhs and Crores also divided into two sub groups
(shown in the place value chart).

➢ So while writing number name in Indian System , starting from right side put commas after
first 3 digits and then after every 2 digits.

Example:
Write the number name of 945723451.

Solution: ( Starting from right arrange the digits of the number in place value chart given below)

CRORES LAKHS THOUSANDS ONES

Ten Crores Ten Lakhs Ten Thousands HUNDREDS TENS ONES

crores lakhs thousands
9 4 5 7 2 3 4 5 1

Tip: In Indian System , starting from right side put commas after first 3 digits and then after every 2
digits

94,57,23,451: Ninety four crores fifty seven lakhs twenty three thousand four hundred fifty one.

International Number System:

International Place Value chart:

Billions Millions Thousands Ones

Hundred- Ten-billions Billions Hundred- Ten- Millions Hundred- Ten Thousands hundreds tens ones
billions millions millions thousands thousands
100000000 100000000 1000000000 100000000 10000000 1000000 100000 10000 1000 100 10 1
000 00

➢ In International System of numeration a number is split into periods. Starting from the right
the periods are called ones ,thousands , millions , billions and trillions.

➢ Further Ones place is divided into ones ,tens and hundreds. Thousands place is divided into
thousands , ten thousands and hundred thousands, same way millions , billions and trillions
also divided into three sub groups (shown in the place value chart).

➢ So while writing number names in International System , starting from right commas are put
after every three digits.

Example: Write the number name of 94572345186.

Solution: ( Starting from right arrange the digits of the number in place value chart given below)

BILLIONS MILLIONS THOUSANDS ONES

Hundred Ten- Billio Hundre Ten - Million Hundred- Ten- Thousands Hundreds Ten Ones
Billions Billions n d- Million Thousand Thousands s
Million
s
9 4 5 7 2 3 4 5 1 8 6

Tip: In International System , starting from right commas are put after every three digits.

94,572,345,186: Ninety four billion five hundred seventy two million three hundred forty five thousand one
hundred eighty six.

Face Value and Place Value:

Face Value : The face value of a digit is the number it represents irrespective of its place in the number.

Example: Write the face value of 2 in 529137.

Answer : 2
Place Value : The place value of a digit in a number depends on its place in the number.

Example1: Write place values of each digit in 425689 and find the difference between the place value of 2
and place value of 5.
Lakhs Ten Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
thousands
Number 4 2 5 6 8 9
Place value 4 x100000 = 2 x 10000 = 5 x 1000 = 6 x 100 = 600 8 x 10 = 80 9x1=9
400000 20000 5000
Difference between the place value of 2 and 5 = 20000 --5000 = 15000.
Example2: Write the place value of 2 in 529137.
Answer: here 2 is in ten thousands place.
therefore place value of 2 = 2 X 10000 = 20000
