Class Lesson: ​Health- Personal and Community Health

Grade: ​1

Duration:​ 30 minutes

Purpose of Lesson:
● Students will learn the importance of good personal hygiene to prevent the spread of
germs and diseases.

Standards​:
● 1.1.P Explain the importance of effective dental and personal hygiene practices
● 1.3.P Discuss the importance of preventing the transmission of germs.
● 1.4.P Identify ways to prevent the transmission of communicable diseases.

Objectives​:
● Students will be able to demonstrate how to cover a cough.
● Students will be able to demonstrate how to effectively wash their hands.
● Students will be able to explain when we cover our coughs and wash our hands we
are preventing germs spreading.

Materials:
● book ​Germs Make Me Sick!​ by Melvin Berger
● Germ lotion
● Black lights
● Sink
● Soap
● Paper towels
Introduction:​ (5 minutes) ​Maria
● Read ​Germs Make Me Sick!​ by Melvin Berger
● Teacher asks, “What do we do when we are sick?” and “What do we do when we
sneeze or cough?”
● Students respond
● “Today we are going to show you why we do those things”

Body of Lesson ​(20 minutes) ​Daywa

● Teacher passes out germ lotion
● Students will pretend to sneeze or cough into their hands, as they put germ lotion
on
● Half of the class will go around room touching different surfaces
● Teacher will shine blacklight on surfaces students touch
● Teacher will ask students to look around the room and ask “Who can tell us
what’s different around the room?”
● Students will observe the spread of germs all around the room
(Sarah)
● Other half of class will have blacklight shone on hands to show germs from lotion
● Students will wash hands to determine how well they know how to wash their
hands
● Have students gather around again, shine black light on student hands to see if
there’s any more lotion on them
*Class halves will switch, so Daywa’s half will go with Sarah and Sarah’s half will go
with Daywa
*Process will be repeated; Daywa will put more lotion on the 2nd half as they have
washed their hands

Closure​: (5 minutes) ​Kristen

● Teacher will say, “Imagine if you touch those germs. You would get yourself or
classmates sick.”
● Teacher will ask students “How do we prevent germs from spreading from our
hands?”
● Teacher will have the whole class demonstrate how to cover cough and wash our
hands
