1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Description

SONATRACH has decided to develop the TINRHERT fields which are located in South-Eastern
Algeria within the Wilaya of Illizi. The geographic position of these fields is indicated on the map
below.

2 PIPELINE WALL THICKNESS DESIGN

2.1 Pressure Containment

Wall thickness calculations for pressure containment have been performed in accordance with the
Algerian design codes.
The calculation of the required wall thickness is based on a percentage of the maximum transverse
(hoop) stress supported by the metal. This is determined from design factors given in Table 2-1, in
accordance with Algerian Standards and the mechanical properties of the material.
Gas Pipelines shall be classified zone III of the Algerian Gas Pipeline regulation, as they are to be
located in a desert area and at a distance further 200 meters from the closest populated area.
However, gas pipelines at a distance of less than 75 meters to CPF boundaries, manifolds and well
sites shall be classified zone Ia in accordance with the same regulation.
Gas trunklines and flowlines are routed through a desert area with no farming or cultivated areas
and with no occupied wellings within 200m of the pipeline routes. Thus the pipelines have been
classified as being with Zone III in accordance with Algerian Gas Pipeline Regulation.
Trunklines and flowlines shall be designed according with gas pipeline regulations, which shall be
buried.

Table 2.1 – Hoop Stress Design Factors - Gas Pipeline

Design Factor X Design Factor Y

Location
Buried or Unburied Buried Unburied

Zone I 0.50 0.30 0.30

Zone Ia 0.60 0.36 0.36

Zone II 0.73 0.55 0.44

Zone III 0.80 0.60 0.55

As per Clause 2.4 of Pipeline design basis (Doc. No. 08572-TRHT-DB-PL-18-OO-201) Zone III and
Zone Ia are applicable for this project.
The wall thickness calculation also takes into consideration the negative wall thickness tolerance of
10% and corrosion allowance of 6 mm.
The maximum allowable transverse (hoop) stress(S) is equal to the lowest of:
• Design factor X, multiplied by Specified Minimum Yield Strength (SMYS) - E
• Design factor Y, multiplied by Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) – R
Where ‘‘E’’ and ‘‘R’’ are the minimum yield strength and minimum ultimate tensile strength and shall
be expressed as ‘‘SMYS’’ and ‘‘UTS’’ respectively as from now on for reasons of coherence with
project documents.
The formula for calculating minimum required wall thickness for pressure containment based on
Algerian Gas Pipeline Code article 6 is as follows:
P D
tmin 
2 S

P D
tmin
2( Min( XE YR) )

Therefore, minimum calculated wall thickness for pressure containment including corrosion
allowance is equal to:
t p  t min  CA

Finally, minimum permissible wall thickness (tf) including corrosion allowance and fabrication
tolerance will as follows:
tp
t f 
1  Nt

Where Nt is in %.
t f  t p  Nt

Where Nt is in mm.
Where:

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

S = Maximum Allowable Hoop Stress (MPa)

P = Internal Design Gage Pressure (barg)
D = Nominal Outer Diameter of Pipe (mm)
CA = Corrosion Allowance
tmin = Calculated Wall Thickness (mm)
tp = Minimum Nominal Wall Thickness (Including CA) (mm)
tf = Minimum Nominal Wall Thickness (Including CA and Tolerance) (mm)
Nt = Negative Wall Thickness Tolerance (%)
D/t ratio of selected wall thickness shall be equal to or lesser than 96.
2.2 Pipe Wall Thickness Thinning

The pipe wall thickness calculation for cold field bends can be calculated as per PD 8010-1. An
indication of wall thinning as a percentage for cold field bends can be calculated using equation (2)
of PD 8010-1 as follows:
50.%
t cb_thin_% 
nc  1
Where:
tcb_thin_% = Percentage of Wall Thinning
nc = Inner Bend Radius divided by Pipe Outer Diameter
Hot induction bends are not envisaged, in this project so no wall thinning calculations are
performed.
3 RESULTS

3.1 Wall Thickness Summary for Pipelines

For flowlines and trunklines, the pipe wall thicknesses are established as specified in Table 3-1.
This thicknesses are final nominal pipe wall thicknesses already covering field cold bend thinning
allowances.
