Introductory Chemistry 1120

Electrochemistry

Lab reports are due by 5 pm (EST) on Monday, 4/20/20

Your lab report must contain the following information:

Experimental data may be collected with other students in introductory chemistry labs. However,
I understand that sharing information required for a lab report or unknown submission (including
but not limited to word processing or spreadsheet files, calculations, graphs, conclusions and
additional problems at the end of the lab report) with other students is a violation of the
University Academic Integrity Code.

Signature (or ASU email address, to indicate signature if an electronic copy is submitted)

1. A conclusion section for the electrochemistry experiment. Refer to your lab manual page xiii
for an example conclusion from the solubility product experiment.

2. The completed data tables (like those found on page 57 of the lab manual).

3. Calculation to determine the number of coulombs, C, that passed through the cell during the
electrolysis.

4. The calculation for the amount of elemental Cu (s) that electroplated (or reduced out) onto the
cathode.

5. The calculation for the number of moles of electrons consumed in the process.

6. The final calculation for your experimentally determined value of the Faraday constant, F.

7. Answer the following questions. Show all work! (Note that section 20.9 on pages 884-889 in
your lecture text will be very helpful when doing these problems!)

1. Determine the correct chemical formulas for the following:

a) calcium sulfate b) cesium hydride c) carbon tetrachlroride

2. Determine the correct chemical names of the following species:

a) ZnI2 b) FeSO3 c) CsNO3

3. How many grams of Zn (s) are electroplated out of a solution containing Zn2+ (aq) if the
solution is electrolyzed for 1 hour 15 minutes and 45 seconds at current of 0.457 amps?

4. In an experiment similar to this one, a polished strip of Cu (s) was found to weigh 18.254
g. This strip was electrolyzed for exactly 26 minutes at an average current of 1.600
amps. The weight of the copper strip after electrolysis was 19.452 g. From these data,
calculate the value of the Faraday constant.

5. Suppose that after the electroplating was complete, you did not allow the copper strip
used for reduction to dry completely before obtaining the mass. How would this
specifically affect your calculated value of the Faraday constant?

6. Suppose that you forgot to obtain one of the amp measurements. Assuming you recorded
the other amp readings and did everything else correctly, how would this specifically
affect the calculated value of the Faraday constant?
