Reading is an essential skill in learning any subject and to access the knowledge.
Reading has always been far from the expectation of being used as a means of
communication similar to speaking, listening, and writing; reading was rather
described as a passive receptive skill. (Harmer 1983, Adams 1990). Point that will
be discusses in chapter 1 are: (section 1.1) the aims of the research, (section 1.2)
the background of the research which explore why this research is important to
be conducted, (section 1.3) discussed about the formulation of research problem
which guide of the research, (section 1.4) describe the objective of the study
which the study want to achieve, as well as (section 1.5) discussed the benefit of
the research for the author, teachers, and also students, the last (section 1.6)

1.2 Background of Study

The English language is like a fleet of juggernaut trucks that goes on
regardless. No form of linguistic engineering and no amount of linguistic
legislation will prevents the raids of change that lie ahead (Robert Burchfield, The
English Language, Oxford University Press, 1985). Now days English has been
worldwide. There are many countries that use English as a second language.
Many people that have been learn English become a native speakers. In this era
there are some students that don’t like to read English text and some of them are
not interested in learning English. So the purpose of this research are to increase
the student’s motivation in reading English text. As we know English have so
many benefit for us. English is the language that most commonly use in the world,
English also as a language communicator and English make us easier to get a job,
because many companies that require the employees who can speak English.

There are 4 skills in English shat should be mastered. The four skill are
listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Each skill is sub-divided into sub-skill
activity, listening, speaking, writing or reading is emphasized, but with other skills
an integral part of the activities, as a real life. The robustness of the model for the
acquisition of destination language skills is studied using the legalized population
survey (LPS) of aliens who received amnesty under the 1986 [U.S] immigration
and control act. Language absolutely central to your learning process, because
without language you cannot make your communicate understanding of a
subject. According to Collins English Dictionary the ability to use language children
are arriving at school with fewer language skills than was the case five years ago.
Government regulation of Pasal 19 number 21 ayat 2 stated that: “The
planning process of learning done by developing culture and read and write”.
Government regulation explained that there is an emphasis that more specifically
for competencies read and write. Reading a milestone in beginning of the
students to like and understand about literature. However reading a culture that
have not been attached among the community. The Indonesian community more
like watching television then reading. Because some people consider that they
have mastered reading skills then they are able to stringing as a word or phrase
that commonly spoken and contains the meaning.
According Suryaman (2009 : 45) reading habit in Indonesia still low. The
results of UNESCO through programme for internal student’s assessment (Pisa) in
2003 show that some children in Indonesia are not interesting in reading. Reading
is a complex activity that involves both word recognition, the process of
perceiving how written symbols correspond to ones spoken language and
comprehension, the process of making sense of words, sentence, and connected
paragraph. (Baudoin et al, 1994, p.i.). The children need some motivation that can
make them interest in reading, because the children should reading to get more
knowledge and to improve they bad habit.
The problem about reading habit arise because of interest and reading
motivation in Indonesia still low. The government also not provide the facilitates
to support the reading motivation. So there are more interest with other activities
that more interesting. Interest is a tendency a desire great to something
(Mulyara, 2009 : 93) interest can excess encourage someone to do something. So
that people don’t interest in reading then they never read anything because they
don’t have willingness. Between interest and motivation are both emerging
because of the element that they need motivation that can arises as a boost than
can support for improving they reading interest.
Motivation also the strategies that used for encouraging someone to like
reading. Usually everyone have different strategies. Therefore some motivation in
reading can help the students to read English text, because if the students don’t
have good reading habit they would not be interested in reading. So that
motivation are one of the important point to make the students have willingness
to reading. Motivation is considered as the power that leads individuals to do
something different domains. In addition to being partly related to the
behaviourist view of motivation, needs theories are related to the cognitive
perspective. This latter stipulates that people’s choice about the experiences and
the goals that they won’t to get involved in or evade are central to motivation
(Brown, 2007).
According Muhibbin Shah in Anonymous (2010), argued in the book of
educational psychology with a new approach, that the motivation can be
distinguished 2 kinds:
✓ Intrinsic Motivation, thinks or circumstances that come from within the
students themselves that can encourage them to take action in learning.
✓ Extrinsic motivation, thinks or circumstance that come from outside the
individual.
Motivation is an energy that can change the personality with onset of affective
(feeling) and response to achieve the goal. “Motivation refers to in the process
whereby goal directed activity is instigated and sustained.” Pearson (2010:41)
According to Wiryodijoyo (1989: 194-196) motivation is an individuals need
to do something that will work and be satisfactory. Some point that affect the
motivation are: First, encouragement of the parents. Home and the atmosphere
of the family becomes a boost that very important to motivated the student’s.
The second one are the encouragement of the teachers. The teacher also become
an important part to increase the student motivation, because the students also
spend their time at school. Next part are the environment, because the
environment are place to students socialize.
Research about the analyse of male and female students motivation in
reading English text are important, because of as the evaluation of how much
students motivation in reading English text and to determine what is the factor
that makes the students have good reading habit, and why they interest in
reading English text. The purpose of this research also to find out what is the
commonly problem that make students reading habit still low. This research also
