II. INTRODUCTION
A brief introduction about the Department which should include
Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 1986 as an undergraduate department with an intake of
150 admissions per Academic year. The department was upgraded to Post Graduate department in the year 2005
with an intake of one PG per year. Later in the year 2009 it was upgraded with an additional PG M.D seat. In the
same year department has been approved for Ph.D admission. Till date, nine PG M.D candidates have successfully
completed their course and we are proud to say that for the past three years (2013, 2014 & 2015) candidates of this
department have secured highest marks among pre-clinical subjects and were awarded Gold Medal.
The department is also involved in teaching Allied health science courses like B.Sc MLT, B.Sc ophthalmic
Technology, Post Graduate Diploma in Genome Technology, M.Phil., MSc MLT, MSc Molecular Biology &
Human Genetics, B.Sc Nursing and other department Post graduate students when they are posted for external
postings in our department.
The department has well trained faculty with Research experience in their respective field. Each faculty is
actively involved in Research projects and completed projects are published in reputed indexed, peer reviewed
Journals.
Department of Biochemistry also encourages Undergraduate students who are interested in Research activities to
undertake STS ICMR projects. In the year 2012 one and in the year 2013 two STS ICMR project were completed
and were published in Indexed Journals.
The department has well established Under Graduate and Post graduate Research lab. Post graduate research lab
is well equipped with modern instruments and can accommodate 16 Researchers to carry out their work
simulateneously. The department has 24x7 Central Clinical Biochemistry laboratory to provide Quality services to
the Clinicians of the hospital and for the benefit of the patients. The clinical biochemistry lab is well equipped with
instruments such as Dry Chemistry Analyzer (VITROS 250, J& J) for Chemistry parameters, BIO RAD D10 for
HbA1C and Chemiluminescence for Hormone Assays, by which the accuracy, precision and reporting time has
improved Routine Internal Quality Assessment Scheme (IQAS) is done twice daily to assess the quality of the
reporting. External Quality Assessment Scheme (EQAS) is done once a month and report is sent to Bio Rad, USA
and our results are on par with the International (Standard) result. Recently 5.1 FS instrument has been installed in
the clinical Biochemistry Lab.

12. Mrs. Deena Mendez presented the public defence Viva voce examination pertaining to the thesis and titled
“Studies on Proteases of Pathogenic Bacteria with Special emphasis on Elastase and Natural Anti Elastase
Factors” on 19-08-2016 at 11:00 AM & awarded Ph.D Degree.
Any other information of the Dept. which is worth mentioning
1. On 11-3-2014, Miss. Mohana Gayathri – Senior Lab-technician in the Central, Clinical Biochemistry
Laboratory was Awarded “Best Women Employee” of SDUAHER University among the Non-Teaching
staff, conducted by Women Empowerment Cell.
2. Medical Lab Professional Week was conducted on 26th April 2014 by Ortho Clinical Diagnostics in
Association with Johnson & Johnson.. Mr. Sunil Kumar was recognized as a best technician for the year
2013-14 in the Central Clinical Biochemistry lab. He was awarded “Certificate of Achievements” in honor
of the outstanding efforts and dedication towards patient care. All the teaching staff and lab-technicians of
Biochemistry department were issued “Certificate of achievement” by the Johnson & Johnson team.
To be an excellent Biochemistry Department through Quality service, Academics & Research performance and to
prepare students who are able to compete successfully in the Medical Profession.
Mission of the Department
1. To achieve 100% pass percentage at both Under Graduate & Post Graduate level
2. To promote Research activities in UG students by creating interest in attending CME’s, Workshops,
Seminars, Conferences, Guest Lectures and involve them in STS –ICMR research activities.
3. Under Graduate & Post Graduate students are Encouraged and motivated to increase their learning
capabilities & to acquire basic practical skills for biochemical investigations in order to support clinical
Diagnosis and correlate the values in management of health and disease.
4. Post Graduate’s and teaching faculty are motivated to attend CME’s, Workshops, Conference’s, and
Guest Lectures to improve their Academic skills & to update their knowledge to know in depth “the
Molecular basis of disease” and to carry the research work at Molecular level.
5. To use research skills acquired from various academic activities, to design the experiments & to use
appropriate statistical methods to analyze and interpret the data further to critically review the
scientific literature.
6. To provide training to the teaching staff & technicians by facilitating them to attend the training
programme for ISO -15189 NABL Accreditation.
7. To provide Quality Clinical Chemistry laboratory services 24x7 to the Clinicians of the hospital for the
benefit of the patients.
