ABSTRACT

In metro cities we can see a huge rush at shopping malls .This becomes even more when
there are huge offers and discounts. Now a days people purchase a variety of items and put
them in the trolley. (300 to 500 words)

CHAPTER 3
INTRODUCTION TO EMBEBDDED SYSTEM

3.1 EMBEDDED SYSTEM:

An embedded system is a combination of computer hardware and software designed for a

specific function or functions within a larger system. The systems can be programmable or
with fixed functionality. An embedded system can be defined as a computing device that will
do a specific focused job. Examples of Embedded systems are appliances such as air-
conditioner, printer, DVD player, fax machine, mobile phone etc. These appliances have a
processor and a different hardware to meet specific requirement of the application along with
embedded software that is executed by the processor for meeting that specific requirement.
The embedded software is also called “firm ware”. For a variety of applications such as
playing games, word processing, accounting, software development and so on, embedded
systems can be used. The software in the embedded systems is always fixed.

11
3.2 Advantages of Embedded systems

 Since embedded systems are application specific, the custom designed system will
have only necessary components and hence significantly smaller than a regular
computer.
 Small size means portability. A lot of embedded systems we use run on battery, and
can be carried in a pocket. E.g.; calculator, digital watch etc.
 Most embedded systems require very low power to operate, thus making them ideal
for medical applications.
 Embedded systems are also called real time systems, where the response to external
event has hard boundary for execution.
 Thus, they are better for application where response to an external event is critical.
E.g.: Deploying airbags inside a car after collision.

3.3 APPLICATION AREAS:

About 99% of the processors manufactured end up in the embedded systems. The market of
Embedded systems is one of the highest growth areas as these systems are used in many
market segments such as consumer electronics, office automation, transportation, military,
industrial automation, biomedical engineering, wireless communication, data communication,
telecommunications.

 Consumer appliances
 Office automation
 Medical electronics
 Computer networking:
 Telecommunications
 Wireless technologies

OVERVIEW OF EMBEDDED SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE:

Embedded systems are generally comprised of custom built hardware which is constructed
around a Central Processing Unit (CPU). The hardware also contains memory chips. Onto
memory chips, software is loaded . The software existing on the memory chip is also called
as ‘firm ware’. The embedded system architecture can be represented as layered architecture
as shown below:

CHAPTER 5
IMPLEMENTATION AND RESULTS

CHAPTER 6
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
6.1 Conclusion
The advancement in science and technology is a persistent process. Latest gadgets and
latest technology are being designed and developed. This application is used in shopping
malls for assisting customers by saving a lot of time in buying commodities. In this
project RFID is used as safety access for the item which thereby enhances the
surveillance performance. This implementation initiates for an automated central billing
system in shopping malls and supermarkets. With this, shoppers no longer have to wait
near counters for payment of bills because of their purchased item information getting
transferred to central billing unit. By this billing process speed increases and becomes
much simpler. In addition to this capability, the mechanism also assures recognition of
cases of theft induced by fraudulent consumers which makes the system more reliable and
fascinating to both customers as well as sellers. This will enhance the shopping
experience to a new level.
Different variables like item cost, item name etc. are continuously displayed on LCD
attached to the trolley. Thus we can say that automatic billing of products by using RFID
technique will be a more feasible choice in the upcoming days keeping in mind the
pandemic the world is facing now.

Recommendations

Based upon the research, recommendations proposed for the further study are as follows:
It can also be extended by using more powerful RFID readers with enhanced capacity in
case of more number of products in the trolley. Water sensitive and more powerful tags
with more advanced features like metal resistant and temperature resistant are under
research which will be very useful in future.
