1. (a)(i)By using the conservation of mechanical energy in fluid ,derive the Bernoulli’s equation, hence
define each term forming the equation. (05 marks).

(ii).The area of cross-section of large tank is 0.5m . It has an opening near the bottom having an areaof
cross-section 1cm2. A load of 10kg is applied on the water at the top. Find the velocity of the water
coming out of the opening at the time when the height of water level is 50cm above the bottom.

(b) Explain briefly why:
i). The angle of contact of mercury with glass is abtuse while that of water with glass is acute.
(01 mark)
ii). Water on a clean glass tend to spread out while mercury on the same surface tends to form drops.
(01 mark)
iii). The drop of liquid under no external force is always spherical in shape. (01 mark)

(c) (i) Write two (2) differences per each, between stream line motion and turbulent motion of the fluid.
(02 marks).
(ii) Explain two (2) factors which affect the viscosity of the liquid in relation to density and
intermolecular forces. (04 marks).
(iii) Glycerine flows steadily through a horizontal tube of length 1.5m and radius 1cm. If the amount of

glycerine collected per second at one end is 4.  10 kg / s .Find the pressure difference between the
two ends of the tube. (03 marks)

2. (a)Two trains are moving toward each other at speed of 72km/h and 54km/h relative the ground. If the
first train sounds whistle of frequency 600Hz. Find the frequency of the whistle as heard by the
passenger in the second train:
i). Before the trains meet. (03 marks)
ii). After the trains have crossed each other. (03 marks)
(Given the speed of sound in air is 340m/s

(b) In a double slit experiment, the third-oder maximum for light of wavelength 480nm is
located 16mm from the central bright spot on a screen 1.6m from the slit. Light of
wavelength 650nm is then projected through the the same slits. How far from the central
bright spot will the second order maximum of this light be located. (05 marks )

(c) (i) Determine the angular positions of the first and the second order line (maxima) for light of
wavelength 400nm and 700nm incident on grating containing 10,000 per centimeters. (06 marks)
(ii)With the help of the diagram, explain briefly how the newton’s ring if formed. (03 marks)

3. (a) (i) State four assumptions of kinetic theory of ideal gases. (02 marks)

(ii) Explain why it is said that cooling is caused by evaporation. (02 marks)

(b) (i) Give two points which differentiate between ductile and brittle material. (04 marks)

(ii) Calculate the density of water in a lake at a depth where the pressure is 24 atm, given that its
density at the surface is 103 kgm-3.

(Compressibility of water = 45.5 x 10-11 Pa-1 and 1 atm = 1.01 x 105 Pa). (04 marks)

(c) (i) If a number of little droplets of water all of the same radius r coalesce to form a single drop of radius

(ii) A long capillary tube of radius 0.1 cm open at both ends is filled with water and placed vertically.

4. (a)Define :

(b) (i)The capacintance C of a capacitor is full charged by 200V battery. It is then discharged through a
small coil of resistance wire embedded in a thermally insulated block of specific heat capcity
2.5  10 2 Jkg 1 K 1 and of mass 0.1kg .If the temperature of the block rises by 0.4K what is the value
C.? (06 marks)
(ii)Draw a labelled diagram of Van-derGraff generator. (04 marks)
(c)Two particle with charge of 20nC and -20nC are placed at points with coordinates (0,4)and (0,-4) as
shown below:-

A particle with chargre 10nC is located at the origin.


i). Find the electric potential energy of the configuration of the three fixed charges. (03 marks)

ii). A fourth particle with a mass 2  10 kg and charge of 40nC is released from rest at the point
(3,0). Find its speed after it has moved free toevery large distance away (03 marks)

5. (a) (i) State the laws of electromagnetic induction. (02 marks)

(ii) Explain, whether an induced current will be developed in a conductor, if it’s moving in a
direction parallel to magnetic field (03 marks)

(b) (i) Briefly explain, how Lenz’s law supports the law of conservation of energy (03 marks)

(ii) A long air-cored solenoid has 1000 turns per metre and a cross-section area of 8 cm2. A second coil
of 2000 turns is wound around its centre and connected to a ballistic galvanometer, the total
resistance of coil and galvanometer being 60 Ω. The sensitivity of the galvanometer is 2 divisions
per micro coulomb. If a current of 4A in the primary solenoid were switched off, what would be the
deflection of the galvanometer? (06 marks)

(c) (i) Explain briefly starting resistance . (01 marks)

(ii) The winding of a d.c motor has a resistance of 4Ω. The motor is designed to deliver 600 W
mechanical power output when operating on 100 V power line capable of supplying up to 12A.
What is the back e.m.f does the motor develop? (05 marks)

6. (a) (i) Enumerate any two Bohr’s postulates and Rutherford’s limitations that lead the
Bohr’s ideas development. (04 marks)
(ii) Obtain the expression of Bohr’s radius of the first shell of the hydrogen atom;hence find its value.

(b) The half life of Au is 2.7 days. Calculate :
i). The decay constant. (02 marks)
ii). the average life. (02 marks)
(c) (i) State Einstein’s photo electric equation; explain the meaning of each term. ( 02 marks)

(ii) Light of frequency 5 x 1014 Hz liberates electrons with energy 2.31 x 10-19 J from a certain
metal surface. What is the wavelength of ultra-violet light which liberates electrons of
energy 8.93 x 10-19 J from the same surface? (05 marks)
