created for the City of Savannah to help homeless citizens

A series of possible
designs volunteered by

Half-container Cottage for
Single Parent with child or
children
• Bunk beds
• Kitchen with plenty of storage
• Small day bed
• Half bathroom
• Microwave oven

Most economical design, with a budget of $19,500.


Container cargo doors can be closed at night for safety.
Flexible layout that can be arranged in a variety of ways,
and relocated at a later date.

Single Parent Cottages
This design can be arranged in a variety of clusters to
create a village atmosphere.
Combined with small solar arrays, and raised planter
gardens, this will help meet City’s goals for renewable
energy and Healthy Savannah.

Half container cottage for a couple.
• Half bathroom with generous amount of
storage; plumbing very compact.
• Kitchen area with sink, microwave and
compact refrigerator, plus a small desk
• “Murphy Bed” folds up to make more space
for living area.
• Shade structure with deck defines outdoor
living space.

This compact design can be arranged in clusters to create a
community, with well-defined space for private and public
uses.
Combined with small solar arrays and raised planter gardens,
helps to meet City’s goals for renewable energy and a Healthy
Savannah.

Full Container cottage for a family.
• Full kitchen with cook top,
refrigerator and sink.
• Private full bath with lavatory.
• Private bedroom for parents.

Use of full container with one kitchen and one


bath keeps the cost at less than double that of
single container at $35,500.
Design allows compact arrays, offset to allow
daylight to enter from all four sides.

Cottages for Families
• Compact design allows relatively densely
packed arrays, with no “no-man’s land”
areas for mischief.
• Creates open courtyards around front
entrances, and allows gardens in the back.
• Economical arrays allow compact utility
runs.

Community Center
• Security office and pantry for charity
distributions.
• Washers and Dryers for villagers with
folding table and detergent storage.
• Private showers, including one ADA, for
people waiting for cottages.
• Community health room, with toilet and
lavatory, for consultations and triage.
