them to someone who does not know what they are.

Example: It is a traditional hat that it is called Sombrero vueltiao. It is made out of Gynerium
sagittatum known locally as caña flecha, a type of cane that grows in the region. The word vueltiao is a
Colombian regionalism from the northern Caribbean Region and the area surrounding the Magdalena
River basin that originate in the word for "turn" or "lap"(vuelta), and arose due to the way the hat is made.
The quality of the hat is determined by the number of pairs of fibers braided together to make the hat,
and its bending flexibility. The more flexible the hat is the higher quality it is.

Some Colombian Festivals and Carnivals

Medellin Flower Festival, August, Medellin.

Known as the “City of eternal spring”, it’s not surprising that Medellin hosts the week-long Medellin
Flower festival. During this week, there are a number scheduled of events and festivities including the
world-famous parade of silleteros.

Scheduled events include horseback riding through town, caravan of chivas (which you MUST try), an
orchid competition, music festivals, a food fair, a firework show, and the parade of silleteros. The city of
Medellin truly comes alive in colour, displaying its heritage through the use of flowers which grow in and
around the countryside. This festival is perfect for tourists who truly wish to have to Colombian
experience.

San Pedro and San Juan Festivals, Tolima

Catholicism plays an important role in Colombian culture. Celebrations held throughout the country in
honor of the saints Peter and John since colonial times are a good example. The provinces of Caquetá,
Huila and Tolima include this holiday in their list of festivals; some of the most representatives are hosted
in the warm tolimense towns of Espinal since 1881 and Natagaima. The San Pedro festival in Espinal
begins a week before the Catholic holidays (June 29th) and offers innovative cultural expressions such
as the children’s beauty pageant and school music presentations. The San Pedro National Beauty
Pageant, the Municipal Troupes Contest, Bambuco dance exhibitions and firework shows are other
attractions of the festival. In Natagaima the San Juan festival happens for 5 days and unites rural and
urban communities in one spirit of joy, to the sound of Sanjuanero. Come and enjoy free concerts of
renowned folk artists such as Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Grupo Niche, Jessi Uribe, among others.

And don’t forget to taste delicious tamales and lechonas, typical dishes in Tolima.

declared by UNESCO a World Cultural Heritage Event.
Black and White Festival, January, Pasto.
This event is one of Colombia’s most famous festivals and is, by far, one of my favourites. Thousands
of tourists from around the world come to Pasto in order to celebrate the festival. The origin of this
celebration comes from the times of the Agrarian Indian cultures of the region, who celebrated to pay
tribute to their moon Goddess. Over time, this celebration has had outside influences such as Spanish
festivals and has incorporated elements of African culture such as its feasts. This festival lasts 3 days
and each day follows a different theme. Celebrations range from vibrant floats which are paraded on
the streets, to adults and kids alike throwing talcum powder at each other. This festival is meant to
celebrate the rich history of the region and diversity of different cultures which have come together. This
event has been so successful that it has been named one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
