(Using strips of words, let the pupils read the different words.)

An ape sat in a cage.

They will play in the rain.

3. Motivation:
(Show picture to the class.)

Say : Look at the picture. What do you think he is thinking ? ( He is


thinking for a cake… He wants to eat a cake…etc. ) What do you think will
he do with the cake? ( Answers vary ) Let’s find out by reading a short
story.
(The teacher reads the story while the class listens )

Jake’s Cake
Jake wanted to bake a cake for his friend Drake. First, he had to take the
things he needed to make the cake. Then, he will shake the things in the
bowl. Last, Jake will bake the cake. Jake and Drake ate the yummy cake
at the lake.
Ask:
1. What did Jake make?
2. Who was the cake for?
3. They did they shake the things?
4. Who baked the cake?
5. Where did they ate the cake?
6. What did they do to the cake?

Say: Now, look at these sentences. Listen very well as I read them.
1. Jake wanted to bake a cake for his friend Drake.
2. He had to take the things he needed to bake the cake.
3. Jake and Drake ate the cake at the lake.

Say: Look at the underlined words in the sentence. They have long a
sounds when read. These words when pronounced will have a long (a)
sound like play, pay, cave, sale, etc.

Now, let us find out more words about the long (a) words.
