ُ ‫فَ ْليَنظُ ِر اإْل ِ ن َس‬

َ ِ‫ان ِم َّم ُخل‬
﴾٥﴿ ‫ق‬
This verse is the fifth verse in Surat Al-Tariq. It is one of the Makki surahs and it was revealed
to nabi elehy salatu wasalm when he was in Mecca - it is the eighty-sixth chapter of the Noble
Qur’an with seventeen verses -

The Virtues of Surat At-Tariq

An-Nasa'i recorded that Jabir said, "Mu`adh lead the Maghrib prayer and he recited
Al-Baqarah and An-Nisa'. So the Prophet said,

Are you putting the people to trial O Mu`adh!

Was it not sufficient for you to recite As-Sama'i wat-Tariq, and Ash-Shamsi wa Duhaha,
and something like them?

Explanation and commentary

1. In this verse Allah subhan wa ta’ala invites the man to think about his own
creation that how he was created in the start. This is alerting man to the weakness
of his origin from which he was created. The intent of it is to guide man to accept
the reality of the Hereafter, because Whoever is able to begin the creation then he
is also able to repeat it in the same way.
In Sura Albaqara the verse 281 says that:

‫ت َو ُه ْم اَل يُظْلَ ُمو َن‬

ْ َ‫سب‬ ٍ ‫َو َّات ُقوا َي ْو ًما ُت ْر َجعُو َن فِ ِيه إِلَى اللَّ ِه ۖ ثُ َّم ُت َوفَّ ٰى ُك ُّل َن ْف‬
َ ‫س َّما َك‬
We should not only take care of this life rather we should pay more attention on
the Hereafter.
Narrated Anas (RA): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say, “O Allah! Our
Lord! Give us in this world that, which is good and in the Hereafter that, which is
good and save us from the torment of the Fire.” (2.201)

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 65, Hadith 4522)

2. Also, one should not be proud of his beauty and strength because he was created
from that type of male and female liquid excretions which are the high level of
impurities. And both man and woman need to purify themselves when they
excrete the liquids. In sura Alnahel verse 4 Allah says:

ِ ‫ق ٱإۡل ِ ن ٰ َس َن ِمن نُّ ۡطفَ ٖة فَإِ َذا هُ َو َخ‬

‫يم ُّمبِين‬ٞ ‫ص‬ َ َ‫َخل‬
Also, when the man was created, he was completely dependent on others for
example in the womb of the mother was dependent to mother for nourishment
(get his food from mother’s blood). And for the birth dependent on others to
bring him in this world. During the childhood and early years totally
dependent on parents. Then why he should be proud of himself.

3. Allah (swt) says let the human look into what he was created from. The
word insan comes from nasiya, which means to forget, and man is the
forgetful being and forgets what he was created from. Man can get to a very
high status in this world, with wealth, authority and might, but he forgets his
pathetic beginnings from a dirty fluid that people wash off their clothes. The
particle ma should have an alif next to it rendering the verse ‘min maa khuliq’,
however, in this verse it has been shortened and its reduction in the language
serves the purpose of emphasising how man has been created from something
so small and insignificant that even the language is reduced.

4. Allah (swt) by using the word ‘khuliq’ in the passive tense keeps his name secret
and does not mention himself and this is consistent with the style of this surah.
When Allah (swt) does not mention his name it illustrates two things. It firstly
exhibits Allah’s displeasure at man to the extent that He does not even want his
name to be associated with this forgetful being. It also indicates that this person
has become so forgetful of his origin that he is not expected to think about Allah
(swt) or is in denial and so Allah (swt) invites man to at least reflect upon what he
was created from.

Conclusion
The primary theme of this Surah is that humankind has to appear before God after death.
Everything in the universe is operating under the protection, guidance, and surveillance of the
great preserver.  The creation of human beings, as well as the creation of this universe, is not a
game. Quran is a decisive Word which no idea or design of the disbelievers can defeat or
frustrate. The creation of this universe and the creation of Man is a serious work of God, and so
is His word, the Quran.

Also, man should look into his process of creation this will help him to avoid the arrogant
behavior because Arrogance leads people to sickness of mind and incorrect behavior. People
who live in a state of pride and deception inhabit a dark internal world. Allah has given a
troublesome mood to these people who are grabbed by the sickness of pride. In the same way
that arrogant people gain nothing but trouble, sorrow and unhappiness in the life of this world,
they also forgo the Hereafter and, most important of all, the love of Allah. Allah has revealed in
one verse that He does not love the arrogant:
Do not avert your face from people out of haughtiness and do not strut about arrogantly on the
Earth. Allah does not love anyone who is vain or boastful. (Surah Luqman: 18)
