Northern Virginia’s Medical Needs Are Being Met by Learn and Live
Wholestic Health Services and Global Innovative Health Services

ALEXANDRIA, VA— Learn and Live Wholestic Health Services (LLWHS), a nonprofit clinic,

began in Feb. 2012 by Dr. Lishan Kassa, the head director and doctor of LLWHS and Global

Innovative Health Services (GIHS). Being born in Ethiopia and graduating from the Ethiopian

Medical School, Dr. Lishan is committed to continuing to make an impact on the physical and

mental health of the Ethiopian community in Northern Virginia.

LLWHS is a nonprofit clinic that strives to provide medical, counseling, and mediation services

that improve and maintain wellness in physical, psychological, and social relations among

families and individuals. LLWHS serves the East African community in Northern Virginia and

puts a focus on mental health and addiction.

LLWHS is a distinctive clinic because its focal point is to provide medical services for

immigrants in the Ethiopian community. Services offered include checkups, immigration

physicals, and health education to prepare the people who are applying for a green card or

citizenship in the U.S. LLWHS provides referrals to follow up on their patient’s visit by

collaborating with health care providers to arrange additional assistance for the patients.

Dr. Lishan values guide her while practicing medicine, which include compassion and a good

strategy to raise the quality of health for the immigration community in Northern Virginia, where

people are less privileged and less proficient in English. She also incorporates her Christian faith

into her clinic.

Dr. Lishan’s patients inspired her to found LLWHS when, “What inspired me is the feedback

from the Ethiopian patients who came to my private clinic. They stated that they did not only

have one problem, but interrelated issues that cannot be solved by writing a prescription, but by

collectively addressing their needs in terms of medical, physical, and relational structure and

interventions,” says Dr. Lishan. This continues to motivate her to be committed to serving the

Ethiopian community and others.

LLWHS is searching for advanced technologies and treatments to serve the community’s

medical needs. The latest addition to LLWHS took place in April 2020, in the form of a new

service that will aid patients who are struggling with opioid addiction, by implementing

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) of Suboxone and counseling assistance. LLWHS believes

group support is a crucial step in the road to recovery, therefore they created a safe environment

for patients to converse and build relationships.

True to her word, Dr. Lishan continues to reach out to the community with all she has. She

opened an additional clinic, Global Innovative Health Services (GIHS) in Oct. 2019, an

extension of LLWHS. GIHS serves LLWHS, as the same patients come to both clinics.

However, what separates GIHS from LLWHS is that GIHS is a profit clinic and accepts the

patient’s insurance, where LLWHS focuses on community service and does not accept insurance.

When patients arrive at LLWHS and they have insurance, Dr. Lishan is not able to serve them as

she does not accept insurance for her work. However, since patients are still determined to

receive Dr. Lishan’s treatment, GIHS was established to accept those patients and have Dr.

Lishan provide them medical assistance.

GIHS provides services that differ from LLWHS that include radiology, ZYTO, BEMER, and

Electrocardiogram (EKG). GIHS concentrates on ZYTO, a medical device that scans a patient’s

hand to provide feedback on wellness decisions. ZYTO can detect deficiencies, illnesses, and

toxicities through a scan that can identify a list of major and minor issues of the patient. It then

provides the exact treatment that can best assist those issues.

GIHS focuses on BEMER as well, a technology that is composed of various structures such as a

belt, mat, or a spot to be put on the specialized area of pain. BEMER then profuse a patient’s

body with pulses of electromagnetic frequencies that causes the capillaries in a specialized area,

to release Nitroxide, which causes dilation of the capillaries, that is going to increase oxygen to

the cells for them to heal. BEMER improves blood flow to relieve discomfort.

Adam Hailu, manager, Global Innovative Health Services

With the addition of GIHS to LLWHS, Dr. Lishan and Adam Hailu, manager of GIHS, are both

determined on continuing to make an impact on their patients who have insurance and to provide

medical assistance that best fits each patient’s needs.

“I want patients to use their resource of medical insurance because of people who have insurance

but do not use it. I want to encourage people to use their resources to the maximum,” says Hailu.

GIHS is working to ensure that their patients will use their medical insurance to its full extent.

Dr. Lishan brings her experience of living and attending medical school in Ethiopia to the

Northern Virginia community, where she has established two clinics that serve to provide

affordable medical assistance to Ethiopian immigrants in the Northern Virginia community. Dr.

Lishan built her clinics based on faith, her values of compassion, and her motivation that is

inspired from the feedback of her patients.

Dr. Lishan and Adam Hailu have collaborated to ensure that all patients can receive medical

assistance through the establishment of GIHS. With GIHS, Hailu creates an opportunity for those

who have insurance to be able to receive treatment from Dr. Lishan. GIHS provides patients with

advanced services of ZYTO and BEMER, which differentiates GIHS from LLWHS. Hailu is

determined to assist patients with services that best fits their medical needs according to the

patient’s medical resources.
